Despite being a Mandopop superstar, Stefanie Sun appeared every bit the “down-to-earth” Singaporean as she enjoyed a simple breakfast with her parents at a coffeeshop in Sixth Avenue.

In a Xiaohongshu post on Aug 14, a fan shared photos of the 48-year-old singer dressed in a plain grey T-shirt, shorts and slippers in the non-air-conditioned coffeeshop which sells wanton noodles, kaya toast and egg tarts.

Netizens took to the comments to praise her “down-to-earth” demeanour, with many appreciating her simple lifestyle.

One netizen said: “Even superstars are just ordinary people. I absolutely adore the casual elegance of ‘underrated singers’, who don’t have that idol baggage and appearance anxiety.

“For 26 years, from ‘girl next door’ to ‘elder sister next door’ and now ‘auntie next door’. She has remained steadfast.”

The reference stems from a viral incident in 2021, when a Chinese teenager mistook Stefanie for an “obscure Singaporean singer”. This triggered an uproar online among her fans, including Chinese singer-actor Xiao Zhan, who took to Weibo to defend her.

Stefanie later addressed the incident and turned the phrase into an inside joke.

Another netizen shared that Stefanie is often spotted in the area, adding that people generally try not to disturb her.

One fan noted that photos of Stefanie with her husband and father have been circulating online.

“Many people use these photos to criticise her, but little do they know that we, her fans, appreciate this side of her – seeing her live freely and happily when she’s not in the spotlight,” the fan wrote, adding that they hope Stefanie would be “happy every day”.

Stefanie tied the knot with her husband Nadim van der Ros in 2011 and the couple have a 14-year-old son and an eight-year-old daughter together.

The 48-year-old is currently in the midst of her Aut Nihilo: Just After Sunset concert tour, which began at Singapore Indoor Stadium in April 2025, in celebration of her 25th anniversary in music.

She last performed in Taipei on May 15 and is set to take the stage at Tianjin on Sept 11.

Earlier this year, Stefanie shared her parenting woes at her Kuala Lumpur concert, saying her children “don’t let me into their rooms”.

“Although they treat me like that, they are still my daily happiness,” she later added, as her fans cheered her on.
