You may remember him for his emo bangs and punk rock image.
Singapore Idol season two contestant Paul Twohill has since switched up his aesthetic, and just this month, he’s attained his master’s degree.
In a recent Instagram post, the 37-year-old shared he has graduated with a Master of Applied Learning and Teaching (Secondary) from Deakin University in Australia.
His graduation photos were generated by AI as he won’t be attending the ceremony but still wanted a way to document the milestone.
Paul, who also has a Bachelor of Mass Communication (Professional Communication) and a Level 5 Tesol certification, said in his post he left a seven-year career in 2025, moved to Melbourne and “started all over again”.
He was previously a lead English teacher at Jan & Elly English Language School in Singapore.
“Was this part of my mid-life crisis? Probably. But I reckon it’s cheaper than buying a Ferrari,” he joked in the post.
He also shared his results: seven high distinctions, four distinctions, three credits and one pass.
“Yes. I’m irrationally annoyed about anything lower than my distinctions,” he remarked before adding: “Here’s to the next chapter of this career.”
Paul was one of the popular contestants in the 2006 singing competition which was won by Hady Mirza and also launched radio DJ-host Joakim Gomez’s career.
Even though he didn’t make it to the finals, he had a good amount of supporters.
In an interview with CNA last year, he recalled having fans screaming and running up to the Singapore Idol van.
At the peak of his fame, he said it would take two to three hours to walk from one end of Orchard Road to the other because he had to stop to sign autographs and take photos with fans.
On the flip side, he also received hostile text messages and death threats, and one man allegedly even tried to stab him once.
“I’ve had phone calls where I apparently made someone pregnant, but I’ve never met them in my life. There was once I was out in the wee hours of the morning and a guy wanted to beat me up,” he told the publication.
