Michelle Obama reflected on dating her now-husband, Barack Obama, before he started his career and found financial success.

During Wednesday’s episode of her “IMO” podcast, the former first lady and her brother/co-host, Craig Robinson, chatted about money in relationships.

“Would you be attracted to a guy who’s not financially sound when you meet him?” Robinson questioned, to which Michelle responded, “Uh, I married one.”

“I left my corporate firm when I met Barack,” she later explained. “I had somebody who was like, ‘I got your back. The risks you think you’re taking, they aren’t that crazy, and I’m here to help you.’”

“That’s when I said, ‘I would rather have that in a partner than a higher income. I would rather have somebody who is ready to do some hard things with me.’ But that meant I had to be ready to do some hard things with him.”

Robinson claimed that “women in general” aren’t like Michelle, 61, when she met Barack, 63, at a law firm in 1989 in her mid-20s, saying many are looking for “a good catch.”

While Michelle argued that they shouldn’t generalize all women, she agreed that some aren’t “looking deep enough” and instead look at “superficial” traits when dating.

Michelle was 25 and Barack was 28 when they met Sidley Austin LLP law firm in Chicago, according to Business Insider.

Within a month of meeting, the former president asked Michelle on a date and the two got engaged in 1991.

They tied the knot the following year and welcomed their first daughter, Malia, in 1998 and second daughter, Sasha, in 2001.

The family’s life in the limelight started in 2004 when Barack was elected as an Illinois state senator.

In 2008, Barack was elected as the 44th US president and was re-elected in 2012.

Life for the two Harvard graduates, however, hasn’t always been easy.

During an appearance on Revolt TV in December 2022, Michelle admitted she “couldn’t stand” Barack when their daughters were young because she felt like she was carrying the load while they both worked on their careers.

“Marriage isn’t 50/50 — ever. There’s sometimes I’m 70, he’s 30, but guess what? We’ve been married 30. I would take 10 bad years over 30,” she said.

The duo also recently dodged divorce rumors after Barack attended President Jimmy Carter’s funeral and President Trump’s inauguration alone.

However, Page Six learned Michelle has just “checked out” of her old life in Washington DC.
