While Singapore Airlines (SIA) is known for its exceptional service, its in-flight meals can be a hit or miss, depending on which caterer prepared the food.
In fact, one passenger on board a SIA flight from Heathrow Airport in London to Singapore was so disappointed with the food that was served they took to social media to air their frustrations.
The passenger wrote about the experience in a post on Facebook page Flight & Travel Explorer on Wednesday (Sept 2), asking “could one bad meal really drag one of the world’s best airlines from a perfect 10 to just 7 out of 10?”
According to the post, the passenger was seated in Economy class towards the back of the plane. As a result, they were among the last few to receive their meal.
The beef option had run out by the time the meal service cart reached their seat and they had to settle for the fish option which the passenger described as “bland” and “stodgy”.
The passenger also commented that breakfast later on was “even worse”.
“Dry, sauceless, overly salty beef noodles, with only a few tiny pieces of meat, were even worse,” read the post.
“Singapore Airlines offered some of the best economy service and seating I’ve experienced, but the catering turned a potentially world-class flight into a merely good one.”

While some netizens who came across this review agreed with the passenger’s gripes and shared their own experiences, some others pointed out that the quality of in-flight meals often varies based on the country the flight is departing from.
One comment read: “The catering out of some outstation airports leaves a lot of room for improvement, regardless of airline. Almost always excellent catering out of Singapore though.”
“I’m writing this on the same flight a day later. Excellent food. The chicken curry was really tasty and the prawn pasta my wife had was delicious. We’re also sitting in the back cabin but it’s only half full,” another netizen wrote.
Another Facebook user commented: “Most of your comments/feedback apply to all airlines. Sitting at the last row (anyone would have the potential to) would mean you can be the last or you can be the first being served (usually rotate between first and second meal to be fair).”
In March 2024, SIA announced that it will be offering more in-flight meal options for Premium Economy passengers.
After the revamp, the menu comprised 175 main courses, 48 appetisers and 34 desserts.
Some of the available dishes are nasi lemak ayam rendang, beef bourguignon and slow braised lamb ragout.
