Sophie Kinsella’s real name is Madeleine Wickham. She wrote the best-selling novel Confessions of a Shopaholic. Novelist Jojo Moyes referred to Wickham as “the queen of romantic comedy.”

Sophie Kinsella, the author of the best-selling novel Confessions of a Shopaholic, died at the age of 55, her family confirmed. In a social media statement posted to her accounts on Wednesday, the family said: “We are heartbroken to announce the passing this morning of our beloved Sophie (aka Maddy, aka Mummy). She died peacefully, with her final days filled with her true loves: family and music and warmth and Christmas and joy.”

Kinsella disclosed in 2024 that she had been diagnosed with glioblastoma two years earlier. Moving further, the family statement read: “We can’t imagine what life will be like without her radiance and love of life. Despite her illness, which she bore with unimaginable courage, Sophie counted herself truly blessed – to have such a wonderful family and friends, and to have had the extraordinary success of her writing career. She took nothing for granted and was forever grateful for the love she received. She will be missed so much our hearts are breaking.”

Who is Sophie Kinsella?

Sophie Kinsella’s real name is Madeleine Wickham. She wrote the best-selling novel Confessions of a Shopaholic. Novelist Jojo Moyes referred to Wickham as “the queen of romantic comedy.” She authored over 30 novels for adults, children, and teens, with over 45 million copies sold. Wickham revealed in April 2024 that she had received a diagnosis of glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, at the end of 2022. Following surgery, she had chemotherapy and radiation.

She wrote her first book, The Tennis Party, at the age of 24 while working as a financial writer under her married name, Madeleine Wickham. The book became a top 10 bestseller and won praise from critics. Under the pen name Madeleine Wickham, she went on to write six more novels.

She authored The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic, popularly known as Confessions of a Shopaholic, five years later under the pen name Sophie Kinsella. Henry, her husband, and their five children survive her.
