While we still don’t have photos of Taylor Swift’s wedding dress or big-day beauty look, her best friend Selena Gomez was quick to share snaps of her outfit for the biggest celebrity nuptials of the year — and of her lip color for the event.
Ahead of the “I dos,” the Rare Beauty founder teased her own “something new” on her Instagram Story: Soft Pinch Lip Oil Stick, the latest launch from her popular makeup brand.
“It’s basically a lip oil, gloss, and lipstick in one,” Gomez wrote on Instagram two days after the TNT bash, showing off the eight juicy shades available along with a selfie wearing the bright coral Wish hue.
If it’s good enough for Taylor Swift’s wedding, we figured it’d be good enough for us — so we called in the full range to test out. Read on for our honest review.
“I tried out two shades: the mauve Dream and the red-orange Success. I was worried the latter would be too warm for my complexion, since I typically prefer a cooler red (like the brand’s Kind Words Matte Lipstick in Devoted), but was surprised by how much I wound up liking it. These lip oil sticks are pretty pigmented — though nowhere near as much as my beloved Soft Pinch Liquid Blush — and feel very hydrating and nourishing, like a balm. I usually don’t go for anything with a glossy finish, but found that a quick blot post-application delivered the softer, stain-like look I like in a lip color. Oh, and Gomez and co. hit it out of the park with the packaging on this one; the translucent, jelly-like tubes are so pretty. If I were to nitpick, I’d just say that the chubby size (or perhaps the angle) of the applicator makes precise application a bit tricky; you’ll probably want to use a mirror when you’re applying one of the bolder shades.” — Elana Fishman, Style & Shopping Director
“Rare Beauty is one of few celebrity beauty brands that never fails to capture my (and the internet’s) attention with its latest launches. So when Selena Gomez dropped this three-in-one lip product, I was eager to give it a try. First off, the packaging is gorgeous; I love how the tube shows you exactly what color the lip oil is. It also feels extremely hydrated and has a beautiful sheen (plus an apple scent I adore). That said, my biggest gripe with Rare products is how pigmented they are — a little goes a long way! Because it’s so hydrating and buttery, the formula can also get a bit goopy in the heat. I hope they make a clear version to wear over lip liner or on its own; I’d be the first in line to shop!” — Hannah Southwick, Commerce Associate Editor
“I love the feeling of this as it wears down. I’m not a big fan of how shiny it is when it first goes on but after blotting and a little bit of dry-down time, it’s so soft and never sticky like other oils. It feels hydrating and smooth and is the perfect touch of color on a day when I don’t want to do a full-fledged lipstick.” — Jacquelyn Kozak, Senior Photo Editor
Pros:
- Combines the nourishment of an oil with the shine of a gloss and the pigment of a lipstick
- Beautiful range of eight buildable shades
- Non-sticky finish
- Gorgeous packaging
Cons:
- Some found the product overly pigmented
- The shape of the tube can make precise application tricky
