Diners who enjoy sharing Tomahawk King’s enormous steaks have about a month to get their fill before the eatery’s gone for good.
The halal-certified steakhouse at Changi Road will be closing after eight years, with its final day of service being Sept 20.
In a social media post on Monday (Aug 17), the restaurant said: “Rising costs and the realities of today’s F&B landscape mean that we can no longer continue sustainably”.
It is a difficult goodbye, Tomahawk King wrote.
The restaurant’s current cost structure and operating model are not viable for them to continue, a spokesperson from TK Group — which runs Tomahawk King, Charr’d and Gyusei Gyukatsu Wagyu Steakhouse — told AsiaOne on Tuesday.
TK Group hopes to revisit Tomahawk King’s large-format sharing steaks concept through a “more sustainable, renewed manner” in future, the spokesperson added.
Currently, it is focusing on strengthening its existing concepts as well as making improvements to menus and operations.
“Our aim is for every concept to be known for doing one thing exceptionally well,” the spokesperson explained.
“As competition intensifies among local, regional and international brands, we will remain focused on our core strength: serving high-quality halal meat and steak concepts.”
‘Thank you for being part of our story’
In its post, Tomahawk King addressed longtime customer, saying: “Over eight years, we watched first dates become engagements, weddings and growing families.”
“We saw children return as teenagers. You celebrated birthdays, baby showers and countless milestones around our tables.”
“Being part of your lives has been our greatest privilege. Thank you for being part of our story. We hope to serve you one last time.”
The business reminisced about its beginnings in 2018 as StuffedWingLab — a food court stall in Tampines selling fried chicken wings with local flavours such as chicken rice and nasi lemak.
It then expanded to open Tang Tea House serving halal Chinese cuisine, which TK Group no longer operates, as well as a full Western menu.
The eatery’s tomahawk steaks gained popularity and the restaurant pivoted to online deliveries during the Covid-19 pandemic. It later opened its first restaurant along Changi Road which eventually became Tomahawk King.
In 2023, the business also launched Charr’d, a steakhouse focusing on A5 Japanese wagyu beef.
Two years later, it opened Gyusei Gyukatsu Wagyu Steakhouse, which sells Singapore’s first halal-certified A5 wagyu gyukatsu (beef cutlets).
Following the closure of Tomahawk King, Charr’d and Gyusei Gyukatsu Wagyu Steakhouse will be TK Group’s only concepts.
While business at the other two restaurants has had its ups and downs, they continue to receive support, the spokesperson told AsiaOne.
“As a small homegrown group, we are grateful for every customer who continues to dine with us.”
‘End of an era’
The news of the restaurant’s closure was met with disappointment, with customers taking to the comments to share memories they made over the years.
One comment read: “Oh my god… the end of a great era. Been here countless times to eat the juiciest tomahawks, truly a gem that wont be forgotten. Definitely visiting again!”
“I tried the tomahawk challenge during your Tang Tea House days … I failed, but this is sadder news,” another netizen commented.
This closure comes after a series of local F&B business closures, including Dan’s Steaks Bar & Grill by former DJ Daniel Ong.
