Hungry Ghost Festival has just begun, and there’s already a ‘spooky’ sighting in Singapore — though this one seems to have left netizens more amused than terrified.
In a TikTok video posted by user Jovan on Saturday (Aug 15), a kite resembling a pontianak could be seen soaring in the skies above Marina Barrage.
Sporting long, messy black hair, a white dress and glowing red eyes, the kite bore an eerie resemblance to the popular mythical spirit.
“Guys, seventh month can fly this kind of kite meh?” Jovan asked in the video.

And while ghostly sightings are typically associated with scares, the kite drew more laughs than screams from netizens, with many taking to the comments section to crack jokes.
“That’s not a kite, she just does that sometimes,” one quipped, while another teased: “How do you know it’s a kite?”
It seems this wasn’t even the first sighting of the ‘pontianak’.
Sharing a photo of what appears to be the same kite, one netizen said: “Can confirm that it was already flying before seventh month.”
In a social media post shared during the Hungry Ghost Festival last year, a similar-looking pontianak kite could also be seen taking to the skies at the popular kite-flying spot.

For the uninitiated, a pontianak is a female spirit in Southeast Asian folklore, commonly depicted with long black hair and dressed in white.
It is said to be born of women who have died while pregnant or giving birth.
