After years of hustling, TVB actor Dai Yiu Ming has bought his first home as a gift to his mum.
In an Instagram post on Aug 15, the 54-year-old, also known as Sunny, posted a photo with her in their new home.
He wrote in the caption: “Mum, this is a very expensive thing to me. But to put it in an old-fashioned way, there is only this life and no next life. Even if there is, we might not even meet again.
“You are in your 80s, but you have only lived in shacks and old public housing apartments.”
Yiu Ming also recounted that his mum previously told him she had lived in an air-raid shelter during the war as a child and ate sweet potato leaves for meals, adding she could survive no matter how difficult life could be.
He explained: “This gift should be a very belated gift to you. No choice, I’m not capable enough to make much money, so I have to be extremely thrifty to scrape by.”
He ended the post by wishing his mum good health and happiness every day.
Yiu Ming debuted in Hong Kong showbiz in 1992 and is known for playing supporting roles in drama series over the years, including in Spirit of the Dragon (1992), A Fistful of Stances (2009), No Regrets (2009) and Over Run Over (2016).
He told Hong Kong Economic Times in 2021 that when he first started off in showbiz, he ate bread every day and steamed pork bun for lunch as his salary was meagre.
According to a recent report by TVB, he expanded his career to China in 2017, but as he can’t bear to leave his mum behind, he only took on short-term work so he could return to Hong Kong immediately to accompany her.
His father died about a decade ago and Yiu Ming told MingPao in an interview in 2019 that he had suffered from depression because of it.
As opportunities were scarce during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021, he turned to livestream sales on Douyin, Hong Kong Economic Times reported in the same year.
East Week reported in 2024 that Yiu Ming worked at a Hong Kong-style diner owned by Hong Kong businessman-actor Billy Cheung to learn the ropes.
Yiu Ming’s filial piety earned praise from many netizens and artistes.
Hong Kong actor Benjamin Yuen commented in his post: “Congratulations to auntie and to my senior.”
A netizen wrote: “Congratulations Yiu Ming! I’m glad for your mum that you are such a filial and hardworking person. Although your career in Hong Kong hasn’t been smooth sailing, you persevered and never given up.
“You will succeed one day. I wish you and auntie a happy life and that things will turn around for the better [for both of you].”
