Horsegirls is racing toward a theatrical release.
Sumerian Pictures has acquired North American rights to writer-director Lauren Meyering’s dramedy feature that stars newcomer Lillian Carrier (Everything’s Gonna Be Okay) and Gretchen Mol (American Gigolo), The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively learned. The distributor is planning a nationwide theatrical release for later this year.
Horsegirls centers on Margarita (Carrier), a 22-year-old woman with autism who aims to prove her independence to her mother (Mol) by learning about hobby horsing as she masters her skills on a stick horse.
Jerod Haynes (Native Son) and Tony Hale (Love, Simon) round out the cast. With her feature directorial debut, Meyering helmed the project from her script that made the 2020 Black List and was based on the family life of close friend and Horsegirls producer Mackenzie Breeden. Breeden produces alongside Alix Madigan and Michael Sherman.
Horsegirls premiered at last year’s Tribeca Festival. It was among the winners at the Seattle Film Festival and Cordillera International Film Festival.
“We’re incredibly excited to partner with Sumerian for the release of Horsegirls,” says Meyering. “Their commitment to inclusivity and support of the film’s message make them the ideal company to bring this story to theaters.”
Adds Sumerian Pictures president of content strategy Rob Williams, “Horsegirls is a charming, emotional powerhouse with strong performances all around. We are thrilled to be bringing this story to audiences.”
Mol is set to debut as a series regular opposite Sylvester Stallone on the fourth season of the Paramount+ series Tulsa King.
Williams negotiated the deal on behalf of Sumerican Pictures with the UTA Independent Film Group.
