Taylor Swift offered a rare critique of her own fiercely loyal fanbase, admitting that a ‘corner’ of Swifties can veer into ‘extreme’ – and even ‘weird’ – territory.
The 36-year-old pop megastar, known for her deeply personal songwriting, admitted she has mixed feelings about followers who comb through her lyrics for real-life clues.
Now engaged to Travis Kelce, Swift has long had her past relationships – from Harry Styles to Jake Gyllenhaal and Joe Alwyn – scrutinized by fans convinced her songs are tell-all confessions.
But in a revealing interview with The New York Times, the singer admitted that some supporters push that curiosity too far.
‘There’s corners of my fanbase who are gonna take things to a really extreme place,’ she explained. ‘There’s nothing I can do about that. There’s people who are gonna try to, like, do detective work, figure out the details – who is that about? What is this?’
She added, ‘When it gets a little bit weird for me is when people act like it’s a paternity test. Like, “This song’s about that person.” Because I’m like, “That dude didn’t write the song, I did.”‘

Swift then went on to explain how she copes with that level of scrutiny.
‘You have to hold tight to your perception of your art and your relationship with it and then you kind of have to [mimes blowing it out],’ she said.
‘There it goes. Hope you like it. And if you don’t now, hope you do in five years, and if you never do, then I was doing it for me anyway.’
The star also offered a rare glimpse into the story behind one of her biggest hits, 2008’s Love Story – a track that fans have long speculated about.
‘I wrote the song Love Story when I was 17, sitting in my bedroom, mad at my parents because they wouldn’t let me go on a date with a guy who was too old so I shouldn’t have been on a date with him anyway,’ Swift said of her parents, Andrea and Scott Swift.
She jokingly added, ‘And this is why you need to discipline your kids because they might write songs that go no. 1.’
The singer, however, remained tight-lipped about the identity of the older suitor.
The interview comes after Swift was seen supporting her fiancé Kelce as he filmed a new campaign for Tommy Hilfiger in New York City on April 13.

The singer reportedly arrived at the shoot in Central Park at around 2pm before spending time inside The Plaza Hotel, while the 36-year-old football star was photographed outside, a source told the Daily Mail.
Kelce – who is said to be set to marry the superstar in July – appeared ‘happy’ and ‘nice’, with the insider noting that he ‘shook hands with NYPD’.
‘Fans weren’t really bothering him but every now and then they would call his name and he’d wave,’ the source added.
Swift and Kelce are believed to be in the final stages of organising their lavish summer nuptials, with The Daily Mail previously reporting that the couple will say ‘I do’ in New York on July 3.
According to insiders, guests were asked to RSVP with a signed NDA when save-the-date invitations were sent out, in a bid to keep details of the ceremony under wraps.
While the exact venue remains undisclosed, it is thought to be a museum-style space – a choice that has surprised fans, many of whom had speculated the wedding might take place at Swift’s Rhode Island mansion.
Sources have also claimed preparations are well underway, with the singer said to have made clear requests about how she wants her big day to unfold.
‘It will take place someplace indoors,’ one insider shared.

‘Taylor doesn’t want it to be like Selena’s wedding,’ the source continued, referring to Selena Gomez’s recent outdoor nuptials to Benny Blanco in Santa Barbara.
Privacy is said to be a key concern behind the decision, with outdoor venues considered more difficult to secure.
The ‘whole thing will be recorded’ so the couple can look back on their big day, according to one source, who suggested Swift may choose to share select moments with fans.
Both insiders also confirmed the reception will be ‘big’ – echoing comments Swift made during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show last October while promoting her album The Life of a Showgirl.
Speaking on the show, she described the wedding as ‘huge’ and admitted she was ‘so excited about it’, adding that smaller weddings can sometimes mean you ‘have to evaluate or assess your relationship’ with guests.
‘I’m not gonna do that,’ she added, before joking: ‘Anyone I’ve ever talked to [is getting an invitation].’
