Sholay gets a fresh Censor nod amid dialogue row; exhibitors gear up for…

Sholay received a new censor certification after the dialogue alteration happened. Meanwhile, exhibitors geared up three lengthy films in December.

Bollywood’s iconic movie, Sholay, is set to be re-released in theatres on December 12 as Sholay – The Final Cut. The film will arrive with the original climax and two deleted scenes. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) passed the iconic film with a U certificate after reviewing it on November 24. As reported by Bollywood Hungama, no cuts have been made in the latest version of the film, which includes additional scenes. With this, the total runtime of Sholay- The Final Cut is 209.05 minutes (3 hours, 29 minutes and 5 seconds), which is longer than the original version released in 1975. It was then around 3 hours and 10 minutes.

Sholay- The Final Cut re-release technical details

Sholay- The Final Cut has been restored in 4k with its original 70 mm aspect ratio of 2.2:1. The sound has been restored using the original sound negative and magnetic soundtrack preserved by the Film Heritage Foundation for an enhanced cinematic experience.

Sholay- The Final Cut dialogue change controversy

The re-release of Sholay has sparked concerns among fans over the potential changes to the film’s dialogue. Last week, viewers were upset when the trailer of Sholay- The Final Cut dropped, as there were some changes that were spotted by eagle-eyed fans. The trailer revealed that James Bond was replaced with Tatya Tope in one of the important dialogues. The altercation was criticised by Javed Akhtar, who was one of the key writers alongside Salim Khan. Not only that, it was highly criticised on social media by the Sholay movie fans.

Why Sholay’s climax was changed in the 1975 version?

The original climax of the iconic movie was changed as there was pressure from the then government. In the original ending, Thakur killed Gabbar Singh, but it was altered and showed that the police arrived and convinced Thakur to refrain from killing the villain. Director Ramesh Sippy earlier told Bollywood Hungama that he was forced to change the climax because of the censorship rules during the emergency period in 1975.

Exhibitors brace for lengthy films in December

Exhibitors have prepared for a busy December as there have been back-to-back lengthy films over three weeks, each over three hours long. The unusual trend started with Dhurandhar, which had a runtime of 3 hours and and 34 minutes, followed by Sholay – The Final Cut which is of 3 hours and 29 minutes. Next week, Avatar: Fire And Ash will be released on December 19, which wil have 3 hours and 17 minutes runtime.
