Despite more than $350 million in career earnings, Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford has no problem cutting corners when it comes to traveling frugally with his family of six.
Matthew’s wife, Kelly Stafford, explained how a recent family trip with the couple’s four daughters — twins Sawyer and Chandler, 7, Hunter, 6, and Tyler, 4 — was decidedly relatable.
“We flew Southwest [Airlines] literally like a month ago,” Kelly, 35, said on the Thursday, March 27 episode of her “The Morning After” podcast. “Him and I and the kids. Listen, you do what you gotta do to get to where you need to be.”
As it turns out, Matthew, 37, has a lengthy history of opting for a discount airline chain — which was explained by Kelly’s podcast cohost, Hank Winchester.
“It was years ago, I remember a friend of mine texting me and being like, ‘I’m flying Southwest and I think Matthew’s on my flight,’” Winchester recalled. “I was like, ‘What?!’”

However, Matthew’s appreciation for the finer things in life come into play whenever he and Kelly are offered “an upgrade situation” while traveling together.
“No chance in hell would he ever be like, ‘Here babe, take this.’ No chance,” Kelly said on the podcast. “He’d be like, ‘See ya later!’ Would never even cross his mind. He’s like, ‘You’re small, I’m big. You’re in the back, I’m in the front. That’s just the way it’s gonna go.’”
Kelly added, “Honestly, I can’t fight him on it. I really can’t. How ridiculous would it look if I sat up front and he sat in the back?”
Regardless of where she’s sitting, Kelly insisted she’s not interested in overhearing the conversations of her fellow plane passengers.
“Do people even actually talk to each other on the plane? No,” she said. “They watch their screens. They do what they need to do. I almost think [with] people who are talking to each other, I’m like, ‘Shh! This is a quiet zone!’”
Elsewhere on the podcast, Kelly explained how she and Matthew have recently been having trouble on the homefront with their twin daughters, Sawyer and Chandler.
“They have decided that they run the world and that they know what’s best, and they have all the attitude now,” Kelly said. “I’m tired.”
As punishment, Kelly and Matthew made the decision to cancel the twins’ upcoming birthday celebration.
“We told them, ‘Birthday party is off because we cannot honestly celebrate you guys right now just because of the way you’re behaving. We love you, but I don’t think you should have a celebration,’” Kelly recalled. “That was really how we both felt, Matthew and I.”
However, the couple was forced to rescind their decision — again, with frugality on the mind — after Kelly found out they couldn’t “get our deposit back.”
“Could we have eaten the cost? Absolutely,” Kelly said. “But we’re also like, ‘OK, maybe this is a sign.’”
She continued, “I had to tell them the party was back on. I was like, ‘It is not because you changed your behavior. It is solely because Mommy and Daddy couldn’t get our money back.’”
