Karla Sofia Gascón is back in the red carpet spotlight.
The Emilia Pérez star attended the Cesar Awards in France on Friday, marking her first red carpet appearance since she was engulfed in controversy over her resurfaced tweets. Gascón reportedly did not speak to the press during her appearance.
Gascón returned to the awards circuit just a few days ahead of the 2025 Oscars, which she likewise plans to attend. “I’m not sure how I feel, but I’m grateful to be back,” Gascón told The Hollywood Reporter about her plans to attend the Oscars. “I’m grateful to all those who’ve believed in me — to Netflix, the production company and my colleagues. We can close this beautiful and difficult path that began three years ago.”
Gascón is the first openly trans woman to be nominated for a best actress Oscar and has kept a low profile since she was engulfed in controversy when older tweets of hers were resurfaced after the Oscar nominations were announced. She did not, for example, attend Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony, where she was also nominated for best actress and was part of the ensemble nominated for best movie cast.
Emilia Pérez leads all Oscar-nominated films this year with 13 nods, but the film’s chances of winning have plummeted since news broke of Gascón’s past, disparaging comments about Black people, immigrants and Islam.
Gascón’s has repeatedly apologized for the slurs, previously insisting, “Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a racist” and “I have defended each and every one of the minorities in this world and supported any event against racism, freedom of religion or homophobia, in the same way that I have criticized the hypocrisy that underlies them, because the first thing I am self-critical of is myself.” She has also written of her detractors, “I recognize, through tears, that they have already won, they have achieved their objective, to stain my existence with lies or things taken out of context.”
Emilia Pérez follows the titular cartel boss (Gascón), who enlists unappreciated lawyer Rita (Saldaña) to help Emilia fake her own death and get a fresh start by embracing her true gender identity.
