Assam influencer Dhunu Joni’s 19 minute VIRAL video SPARKS controversy: Is it real or fake?

The incident has led to extreme cyberbullying; the hashtags #DhunuMMS and #AssamViralGirl are being widely used on different platforms.

Instagram 19-Minute Viral Video: This week in Assam, the name Dhunu Joni has gained social media attention, which led to total confusion. A few unclear online posts were the starting point of the whole situation, but now they have turned into a huge gossip, discussions, and deepfake fear surrounding the young Assam influencer who suddenly found herself at the centre of the big issue. The buzz began when social media users claimed that an apparent ‘private video’ of Dhunu had leaked.

Who is Dhunu Joni?

Dhunu is an Assamese artist and influencer hailing from Nalbari district, who gained a massive fan base on Instagram and YouTube through her music, dance clips, and cultural content. Just after the alleged viral video started circulating, she disappeared from every social media site on November 28-29, which caused a lot of rumours.

Is the 19-minute viral video real or AI-generated?

The video may be a deepfake, according to cyber analysts who have examined the viral content and identified several indications of AI manipulation, such as abnormalities in face mapping, among others. An unverified comment linked to Dhunu stated that, “AI has ruined my life,” raising concerns about influencer privacy and cyber abuse.

Who is the man in the 19-minute viral video?

The problem escalated owing to conflicting and unverified reports about the person in the video, who was initially recognised as a married schoolteacher and later on as the uncle of Dhunu. Authorities have not confirmed any of these claims, and the Assam Education Department has denied any investigation regarding school staff. Online photos alleging to show the couple in wedding dresses are likewise unconfirmed.

Social media is divided after…

Although some individuals have disseminated misinformation and engaged in trolling, others, mainly women’s rights groups, have urged the people to respect the influencers’ privacy and refrain from spreading unverified news.
