Cherie Lim and Huang Yiliang are making their return to acting with the new microdrama BingBingBiangBiang Kopidiam.

The series was announced at a press conference at Travel Star Booth at Singapore Expo today (Aug 21), with the first episode expected to premiere in mid-September on Bing Bing Biang Biang Squad’s TikTok and Instagram pages.

The latter is a live commerce channel founded by veteran actors Cassandra See, Jason Oh and Constance Song.

Directed by veteran producer Michael Woo known for producing local sitcoms including Don’t Worry, Be Happy (1996 – 1999), the 100-episode comedy series centres on first-time hawker Ah Liang (Yiliang), who rents a “cursed” stall at a neighbourhood coffee shop to sell crab bee hoon.

Rumour has it that when the stall is occupied, the whole coffee shop thrives. But when it’s empty, the rest of the businesses slow down too.

From day one, nothing goes according to plan at his stall, including staffing drama, nosy neighbours and a suspicious stall-owner convinced he’s having an affair with his own employee. Every small mishap pulls the whole coffee shop into chaos.

Besides Cassandra, Constance and Jason, the microdrama also stars Jin Yinji, Cherie Lim, Apple Hong, Tang Miaoling and Joy Yak.

Cassandra said that she hopes the drama will be relatable to Singaporeans.

“We hope viewers will be able to see themselves in the characters, such as those customers sitting and buying food at a kopitiam,” she added.

Yiliang shared during the press conference: “I am someone who believes in fate, and this is something that I grew to understand as I got older. I haven’t acted for 19 years and have forgotten about filming.”

He could be referring to his last TV drama The Golden Path, though he also acted in his self-directed comedy movie My Ghost Partner which was filmed in 2010 and released two years later.

He added at the press conference that he was grateful to Jason and his friends for visiting his hawker stall Old Fisherman in June to support him and invite him to participate in the series.

He agreed to the project even though he had no knowledge of what a microdrama was and the team agreed to accommodate to his business operations, filming only on his off days on Mondays.

“I hope everyone will like it,” he added.

Former actress Cherie Lim, who is wife to local billionaire Peter Lim, plays nosy fried chicken stall owner Bing Bing in the series to support the growth of the local entertainment industry and to give back to society.

She said that when Cassandra called her for a meet-up to support Yiliang at his Circuit Road Hawker Centre stall, she agreed to it immediately.

Cassandra added that during their meal, she brought up the concept of the microdrama: “Cherie is definitely not an ordinary person now, but I told her to consider taking on the role of an ordinary person who sells fried chicken.

“She was very humble, and said, ‘Okay, I want to play a nosy character like this.’ I was surprised when she told me she liked to play a character like this.”
