George Clooney and Amal Clooney have been forced to evacuate from their home in France as wildfires continue to rage across Europe.
The couple and their nine-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, live in Brignoles, located in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur region of the country, which has been threatened by fires that are spreading across France, Spain, Italy, and Greece.
In a letter to the mayor of Brignoles, Didier Bremond, the 65-year-old Oscar-winning actor confirmed that he, the 48-year-old human rights lawyer, and their children have evacuated from their home, and vowed to support their town regardless of the impact from the wildfires.
According to People, George penned: “Dear Didier, At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment,” the letter began.
“As we evacuate Brignoles we want to emphasise two things, first we hope you and the people of our city are safe and second that Amal and I are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we’ll be part of making it whole.
“We love Brignoles and our friends who live there.”
According to CNN, approximately 224,000 people have been evacuated in the Gironde region of France, while 3,000 moved away from the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur region because of the fires.
George and Amal moved their family to a French farm — reportedly bought for US$8.3 million (S$10.7 million) in 2021 — to make sure twins Alexander and Ella, eight, could grow up out of the spotlight.
Last year, the Jay Kelly star told Esquire magazine: “You know, we live on a farm in France. A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid I hated the whole idea of it.
“But now, for them, it’s like — they’re not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life.
“I was worried about raising our kids in LA, in the culture of Hollywood. I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life.”
George pointed out that the culture in France is very different from the US. He added: “France — they kind of don’t give a s*** about fame.
“I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids.”
Also that year, George, Amal, Alexander and Ella became French citizens. According to an official decree in France’s government gazette, the family of four all received French passports.
However, the Batman and Robin alum previously admitted his French language skills are not good.
He told France’s RTL radio: “I love the French culture, your language, even if I’m still bad at it after 400 days of courses.”
Along with their French properties, the Clooneys also own an estate in Italy’s Lake Como, a manor house in England, a New York apartment and a property in Kentucky.
