A snack store in Marina Square has garnered attention for extending a helping hand to others.

Located in a quiet part of basement one, Made’s A Cafe is manned by employees who are elderly, use a wheelchair or walking stick, or youths going through hard times.

In a video posted on Tuesday (Sept 15), public speaker Bruce Mathieu said that he had passed by the store once.

When he saw it a second time, he noticed the same elderly woman standing there, ushering visitors to take a look at the shop’s offerings.

Upon doing so, Bruce found out that the woman’s name was Mary.

He also learned that Made’s A Cafe was started in 2022 by a woman named Jane Seow.

“They don’t call themselves a social enterprise. Just an enterprise with heart,” he wrote in the video caption.

The shop was opened in partnership with Privilege Enterprise Group (PEG) which was also founded by Jane, a check by AsiaOne found.

The founder, who is elderly herself, shows up to the store daily, the Instagram post stated.

The store offers a variety of brand-name items such as Hello Panda and Pringles as well as snacks and tidbits packaged by PEG.

“The items sold here are mostly premium quality and reasonably priced,” Bruce said.

According to another TikTok video on the store, Made’s A Cafe also sells coffee and tea as well as ice cream and cakes.

Bruce’s video has since garnered over 264,000 views.

The story behind the Made’s A Cafe has touched the hearts of netizens, some of whom left encouraging comments and promised to visit soon.

One netizen wrote: “I definitely will make a note to go this Sunday.”

“Thank you for sharing this… More awareness is always needed for small businesses,” another comment read.

“When I see shops with elderly people, I buy… any random cute thing even if I don’t really need it,” a netizen said.

Some people also expressed concern for the store’s future, given that Marina Square will be closing in March next year for redevelopment.

“I hope they have a new place for them to continue the cafe,” one commented.
