Demi Lovato has described learning to cook as a ‘huge win’ in her recovery from an eating disorder.
The singer made the admission while promoting her new cookbook at an event with Eli Rallo at the 92nd Street Y in New York on Tuesday.
One Plate At A Time: Recipes For Finding Freedom With Food is due to be released on March 31.
The star, who battled bulimia for years, said her relationship to cooking began to change five years into her recovery, when she was 30.
‘I think this whole book is celebratory because it’s a celebration of how far I’ve come,’ she said.
‘I used to step foot into a grocery store and break down into tears because I was so overwhelmed by all of the food.
Demi Lovato has said her cookbook made her heal from a severe eating disorder: ‘I used to step foot into a grocery store and break down into tears because I was so overwhelmed by all of the food,’ she said on Tuesday in New York; seen in January
She also avoided a lot of fun foods, she said: ‘There was a time in my life where I wouldn’t celebrate my birthdays with cakes, and so to have a birthday cake recipe in my cookbook is so meaningful and has been so rewarding’
‘And now I’m not only going into grocery stores and shopping myself, but I’m also cooking the meals that I’m making, and that’s a huge win for me.’
She also avoided a lot of fun foods as she said: ‘There was a time in my life where I wouldn’t celebrate my birthdays with cakes, and so to have a birthday cake recipe in my cookbook is so meaningful and has been so rewarding.’
This comes after the singer reportedly lost 50lbs in the past year by changing up her diet and exercise routine.
A dinner with friends made her realize how far she has come.
‘We turned it into this spaghetti squash salad. That was the first recipe that I cooked with friends where I was like, “Wow, this is actually really fun,”‘ she said.
The former Disney star also said: ‘When I actually stepped foot into the kitchen and had so much joy come from it, and I was proud of what I made.’
And she wants to help others heal.
‘I wanted to create a cookbook that was for people who may have had disordered eating in the past or are just intimidated to step foot into the kitchen for the first time,’ she remarked.
‘It’s just about getting in the kitchen and getting comfortable around cooking, and that will set you up for success later down the road with more recipes.’
