Darren Lim will be making his American acting debut in upcoming film Hudson & Maria.
The 53-year-old local actor revealed in an Instagram post with local radio station 96.3 Hao FM on Aug 17 that he has shaved his head to play a Qing Dynasty official.
In an interview with Lianhe Zaobao published today (Aug 27), Darren laughed off his “sacrifice”: “A man shaving his head is never as shocking as a woman shaving hers. It can make a woman famous for life, but a man shaving his head is just botak (bald).”
Darren shared that the last time he had gone bald for a role was about 20 years ago, when he played cancer patient Lin Laifa in the local drama A New Life (2005).
Hudson & Maria is set during the Opium War of 19th-century China and tells the true story of English missionary Hudson Taylor (William Moseley) who rejects colonial norms and adopts Chinese language and customs to share religious teachings in China with his wife Maria (Poppy Drayton) and good friend Wang Laijun (Ludi Lin).
The film also stars local actress Tan Kheng Hua, Singapore-based American actor Bobby Tonelli, as well as British actors Rupert Graves and Jeremy Swift. Filming began in Malaysia in August.
Darren shared during the interview that he had undergone a virtual audition with director Matt Mikalatos to clinch the role.
“Although my role isn’t large, he is a key character and I am very happy to be part of the production. When I was getting my costume fitted, I visited the ‘office’, which is located in a large film studio in Johor Bahru. The set was built indoors and decorated beautifully with meticulous attention to detail,” he added.
