Since his 2019 scandal, Hong Kong singer Steven Cheung has been experiencing financial hardship, unable to pay off his debts.
In a recent interview, the 41-year-old said he won’t file for bankruptcy as he feels that evading his debts would be irresponsible.
“Although not being able to pay people back is immoral, it’s better than declaring bankruptcy and directly avoiding responsibility. I won’t dare to hold my head up in public,” he explained.
A former member of the Cantopop duo Boyz, Steven faced backlash in 2019 when he was caught in a cheating scandal involving four women. He also married model Au Yin Man while still dating actress April Leung.
The controversy caused him to lose job opportunities.
He currently has four children with Au, including one with special education needs.
During the interview, he added that he won’t apply for welfare assistance as he would rather support his family and repay the debts through his own hard work.
He said the financial aid would only provide enough for his family’s basic needs.
“I am able-bodied. I should continue trying to look for opportunities to improve my family’s situation… I don’t want to stick my hand out for aid and stay at home to look after the children,” he said.
“Not working makes me feel very repressed… Besides being responsible to my family, I also have responsibilities to my creditors, so I insist on not filing for bankruptcy and not receiving welfare aid.”.
After his scandal, Steven has reportedly taken on odd jobs such as construction work and flyer distribution to keep his family afloat.
In 2022, Au announced their divorce but they reconciled two days later.
Last week, the 34-year-old posted an Instagram Story which appeared to have been directed at Steven: “We have a power outage once a month, and we have to move once a year.
“What makes you think you can still continue down this path in the entertainment industry?”
