NBC has reeled in a small screen reunion for the season three premiere of St. Denis Medical.
The network has drafted Damon Wayans to play Dr. Highland on the mockumentary series, which stars David Alan Grier with whom he starred on the sketch comedy series In Living Color. Dr. Highland is described as a “charming but pompous new doctor at St. Denis” who has been brought into the facility to fill in while Grier’s Ron recovers from surgery. All the patients and staff — aside from Allison Tolman’s character of Alex — are said to be “head over heels for him and his insights.”
Season three debuts on Monday, Nov. 2. In addition to Grier, the series stars Wendi McLendon-Covey, Tolman, Josh Lawson, Kahyun Kim, Mekki Leeper and Kaliko Kauahi and others. St. Denis Medical is set at an understaffed Oregon hospital where dedicated doctors and nurses try their best to treat patients while maintaining their own sanity. Showrunner Eric Ledgin also executive produces alongside Justin Spitzer, Simon Heuer, Bridget Kyle and Vicky Luu for Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.
Wayans and Grier both broke out as members of the cast of In Living Color, which was created by Wayans’ brother, Keenen Ivory Wayans. They went on to reteam for the small screen in Damon for Fox. That series, which debuted in 1998, lasted a single season and produced 13 episodes. More recently, Grier appeared on stage with the Wayans family to help induct them into the NAACP Hall of Fame during the 2025 Image Awards.
Wayans is repped by Verve. He most recently starred in Poppa’s House opposite his son, Damon Wayans Jr., and Lethal Weapon. His other TV credits include the hit ABC sitcom My Wife and Kids.
