Orville Peck has opened up about the catalyst of his cancelled 2023 Bronco Tour.
The 38-year-old country singer revealed that he attempted suicide prior to announcing he needed to halt the tour, citing mental health issues.
‘I was a bad addict, a coping alcoholic,’ he admitted in a new Rolling Stone interview. ‘And I had this spiral moment, where I went back to my hotel and tried to take my life.’
Looking back on the harrowing moment, he reflected, ‘It was a big turning point for me, with a lot of realizations to come. It was something that needed to happen.’
The South African-born musician described the time period, which also included a breakup and rehab stint, as ‘one of the worst places’ of his life.
It led to the creation of his upcoming album Mule, which is slated for release on September 18.
The Daily Mail has reached out to representatives for Peck for comment but has yet to hear back.

This week he announced the new music in an Instagram post, writing, ‘Mule – my fourth studio album arrives 9/18/2026.
‘This record is a chronological account of the year I lost my way. You can pre-save it tonight at midnight EST, and listen to the first single, “Too Little, Too Late” on all platforms.’
Peck – born Daniel Pitout – told Rolling Stone about his time in rehab, ‘I didn’t want to be there. I thought it was a waste of time, that I’m unique and didn’t have a problem.
‘So I was like, I’m going to write the funniest song about this experience, because at the time I was just like, “F*** this. I want to leave.”‘
The end result was a track called Rehab Blues.
Elsewhere in his conversation with the outlet, the queer singer said he’s learned to stay honest in his storytelling, and lean into vulnerability.
‘What I was really trying to capture in terms of the concept, there was no way to gloss over or sugarcoat it,’ he said about the content of his imminent album.
Mule follows the music artist’s third album Stampede, released in August 2024.

He made his Broadway debut in summer 2025, starring in Cabaret, telling People magazine at the time that he was ‘having the best time of my life.’
