Dolly Parton and Tim Curry are among the names being honored Sept. 8, when all Broadway theater marquees will dim in memoriam of the legendary performers and theater figures.
Per a tradition established last year by the Broadway League, all Broadway theaters will dim their lights once a quarter in recognition of prominent members of the theater community who have passed. The Sept. 8 light dimming will also honor the late Glen Hansard, Clive Davis, Josh Grisetti, Gina Ferrall, Louise Lasser, Anna Louizos, Seth Marquette, Anne Russell, James Walsh and Harold Wheeler.
All theatre marquees will dim simultaneously on Sept. 8 at 6:45 p.m. ET in their honor.
Parton will soon have a musical about her life coming to Broadway. Parton was a co-writer and lead producer on the show, Dolly: A True Original Musical, which is scheduled to begin previews in December, featuring songs from Parton. Parton also wrote the Tony-nominated score to the musical adaptation of 9 to 5: The Musical, which ran on Broadway in 2009.
Curry appeared on Broadway five times throughout his career, beginning with The Rocky Horror Show in 1975, and including starring as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Amadeus in 1980, and as King Arthur in Spamalot in 2005. The current revival of The Rocky Horror Show paid homage to Curry, and his origination of the character Dr. Frank-N-Furter, after his passage, with an onstage tribute to his work by past and future Dr. Frank-N-Furters, Luke Evans, Paul Soileau and Jake Shears, and a performance of “I’m Going Home.”
Both Parton and Curry died on Aug. 25 at the age of 80.
