After nearly four decades, one of Drew Barrymore’s most iconic looks has been resurrected.
But it wasn’t on Barrymore that it reappeared.
During the taping of “The Drew Barrymore Show” on Thursday in NYC, an audience member caught the host’s eye as she sat in the front row wearing a black mini dress with purple rosettes along the neckline.
In a clip shared on Instagram, Barrymore can be seen walking over to chat with the young woman.
“Do you know that I have a history with this dress?” asked Barrymore.
“I do,” shared the fan who had introduced herself as Ruby, adding, “My mom and I are both big vintage collectors… this was hers in the ‘90s.”
“I like to collect a lot of pieces that people wear,” she continued, “this is my homage to you today.”
Before recounting the history of her very own Betsey Johnson dress, Barrymore exclaimed, “I’m so honored!”
“I saw you when I walked in, and I was like ‘God, that looks like the Betsey Johnson dress I wore to the Oscars.’”
Barrymore attended the 1989 Academy Awards at age 14, wearing a black cotton off-the-shoulder Betsey Johnson dress with two purple rosettes on each side of the neckline. She was there with fellow child star Corey Feldman, who was her boyfriend at the time.
“I didn’t have the money, I didn’t have the resources, I didn’t have a stylist. So I grabbed my Betsey Johnson off the rack at my house and I wore that to the Academy Awards,” Barrymore shared with her audience.
The actress continued, “I loved it! I’m just so excited to be sharing in this moment with you, Ruby.”
Back in 2023, Feldman was a guest on Barrymore’s show, and the pair recounted their romance, including their Academy Awards show date.
“I just threw on a cotton Betsey Johnson dress, off the rack. I don’t know how much it cost, probably $65,” adding, “I remember getting there, and I remember seeing people in such designer duds. And I remember looking around and thinking, ‘Oh, I’m very underdressed. I’m wearing a cotton Betsey Johnson dress. Whoops!’”
As one of our favorite ‘90s style icons, here’s hoping Barrymore still has that Betsey Johnson in her archives — it’s never too late for a re-wear!
