It isn’t every day that a F&B business closure story gets a happy ending.
A beloved stalwart, Pantler, announced in early August that it will shutter by the end of the month unless they could find someone to take over the business.
To their surprise, they actually managed to pull it off.
“We were approached by several parties interested in taking over or investing in the business,” Pantler said in an Instagram post on Thursday (Sept 3).
“And after many (many) conversations, we’re very happy to say that it has been confirmed that Pantler will continue.”
The 12-year-old River Valley patisserie, known for its Japanese-French bakes, added that “many familiar faces will remain” and that they’ll continue producing items that their customers know and love.

In an interview with The Business Times, owner Matthias Phua said that the person taking over the business is new to F&B, but can’t reveal more than that now as the deal is still going through legal processes.
Matthias added that he and his co-founder Tomoharu Morita will be handing over ownership to the unnamed backer. However, the core pastry team, including sous chef Ling Tian Wei, will remain.
“There are no plans to move and the existing tenancy will continue,” he told BT. “Business will operate as normal during the transition.”
Outpouring of support
After Pantler’s closure announcement in August, a huge wave of support came pouring in, resulting in long queues outside the shop and many netizens offering their assistance.
“If there’s anything we can do to keep Pantler open, please let us know,” one comment read, while another stated: “I hope the chapter can continue somehow, super crushed to hear this”.
This led to Pantler extending their intended last day of operations on Aug 30 by a week.
“We’ve decided to extend our final day. Pantler will now remain open until Sept 6,” it wrote in an Instagram post dated Aug 26.
“We know many of you have been hoping to visit us once more, so we wanted to give you an extra few days to stop by. And perhaps, a little more time for us too.”
Turns out, the support and time extension was what it took for Pantler to secure the business-saving investment.
Pantler first opened in 2014 at Telok Ayer Street and became known for bakes such as their signature Swiss rolls, chocolate hazelnut cakes and strawberry shortcakes. It moved to its current premises in 2021 and has been there since.
