No matter how hard we try to declare them outdated or ugly, Uggs remain the cozy fashion staple that will never go out of style. Just ask celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Lawrence, Lily-Rose Depp, Kaia Gerber and quite literally every stylish fashion girl I look to for style inspo.
When I look back to my childhood, I have vivid memories of slipping on my older sister’s tall Ugg boots to run errands with my mom. Naturally, I would fold them halfway down to show off the signature sheepskin lining — just like she and every other tween girl in the early 2000s wore them.
Soon after, I was gifted the coveted Classic Tall Ugg boots myself and began the ritual of waiting — rather impatiently — for them to dry after spraying on a suede protector, a tradition I still follow to this day (with the same level of impatience).
Collectively, it feels like we all tried to tuck this ultra-cozy style into our Y2K mood boards — but thankfully, the boot has evolved with us, and I’m fully here for it. We’ve carried our cozy roots into adulthood, and frankly, I’m not mad about it — nor will I entertain anyone calling the boot “basic.”
What I love most about the classic boot is its versatility. A few seasons ago, like many other Gen Z girls, I joined the cult following for the brand’s platform styles, which were especially appealing given my height of 5-foot-3 (on a good day).
My black Ugg platforms became part of my winter uniform: perfect for walking the dog, grabbing my morning Daydream Latte at Blank Street (iykyk) and even dressing up for the office. I liked to pair them with low-rise trousers and a chunky sweater for the perfect mix of cozy yet polished.
More recently, I’ve gravitated toward the flat Ultra Mini in classic chestnut. They’re lightweight and cut just above the ankle; I like to think of them as the perfect elevated slipper.
There’s nothing like the nostalgic feeling of unwrapping a buttery, perfectly hued pair of Uggs. The style is ultra-trendy, yes — but for good reason.
These boots have the classic, cozy sheepskin lining inside that actually keeps your feet warm, while being breathable enough that you won’t overheat or get super sweaty.
In short, they’re pretty much the perfect shoes — and I love them just as much today as I did circa Y2K.
