Rapper DJ Unk, who is best known for his 2006 hit song “Walk It Out,” has died at 43 years old, his wife Sherkita Long-Platt announced on Friday.
“Please respect me and my family. I just lost my husband and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same,” Platt shared on Facebook. “I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER”
The Atlanta based rapper’s cause of death has not yet been revealed.
In a statement given to the NY Post, Korey “Big Oomp” Roberson — who founded the record label that signed Unk (real name Anthony Leonard Platt) in 2000 — reflected on the rapper’s death, calling him “a true ATL legend.”
“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the countless fans who were touched by his artistry and spirit,” the message reads. “DJ Unk was not just a legendary DJ, rapper and producer, but a true cornerstone of our label and the imprint that he left globally will be cherished forever.”
“Hit songs such as ‘Walk It Out’ and ‘2 Step’ have left an indelible mark on the industry, and his legacy will continue to inspire artists, DJs, and fans alike for years to come. His energy, creativity, and commitment to the craft will never be forgotten.”
“We ask that you keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. We also want to thank everyone who has supported DJ Unk and the Oomp Camp over the years,” the statement continued.
Roberson added, “Rest in peace, Unk. You will forever be missed.”
“Now walk it out!” he finished.
Unk’s single, “Walk It Out” — which went platinum — was featured on his 2006 debut album, “Beat’n Down Yo Block!”
The song climbed into the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, followed by “2 Step.”
Despite dealing with unspecified health issues in 2009, which inhibited his career activity, he released other singles in later years. He was also included on the 2K Sports NBA 2K9 video game.
