Timothée Chalamet has said he is ‘forever indebted’ to a sweet fan who encouraged a lacklustre crowd to cheer for him at a Marty Supreme Q&A in Los Angeles.

The actor, 30, and his A Complete Unknown co-star Elle Fanning, 27, arrived to a sea of fans at the film event, which was hosted at Los Feliz 3 Theatre on Thursday.

But as the exclusive chat kicked off, he shared a touching moment with a fan who had saved him from being greeted by an awkwardly quiet audience.

When Timothée was welcomed on stage by Elle, the crowd did not immediately cheer for the star, prompting an eager spectator to urge a more enthusiastic response by cheering for the actor as he took the stage.

Noticing that a front-row fan sparked the crowd’s warm welcome, Timothée delayed the Q&A to express his gratitude to the fan.

Picking up the mic on the stage, he told the supporter: ‘Hey man, I appreciate you trying to get it going. I saw that man, I am forever indebted to you.’

The audience burst into laughter and gave the actor a ‘woo’ of praise as he settled into his chair alongside the Super 8 actress.

For the event, which was open only to American Cinematheque members for $19 a ticket, Timothée cut a casual figure in jeans and tennis shoes.

He completed his ensemble with a Comme des Garçons striped shirt, worth £185.

Meanwhile, Elle, who was the moderator for the event, wore a pair of flared jeans and a black top, which she paired with towering black stilettos.

Elle and Timothée are pals in the industry and frequent co-stars, having worked together in the Bob Dylan biopic and A Rainy Day in New York.

Timothée has been hard at work promoting the critically-acclaimed film over the past few months, including setting up a slew of stores to sell merchandise.

He plays the titular character in the sports drama, loosely modelled on Marty Reisman, who pursues his dream of becoming a champion table tennis player.

Timothée has already won a Golden Globe for the flick and has been nominated for an Oscar.

The movie was released in the UK on Boxing Day and co-stars Gwyneth Paltrow, who came out of retirement for the role as Marty’s older love interest.

The film has been a commercial hit already, thanks in part to Chalamet’s marketing verve and red carpet appearances with girlfriend Kylie Jenner.

It has earned over $72 million at the US box office, meaning that it has quickly surpassed the performance of One Battle After Another, starring Chalamet’s rival for the Oscar, Leonardo DiCaprio.

Experts estimate it may end up taking around $180 million globally.

The film, directed by Josh Safdie, tells the story of an ambitious youth in 1950s New York, hustling his way to table tennis glory.

Along the way, he has an affair with a married Hollywood actress, played by Gwyneth, and is ‘paddled’ on the bottom with a table tennis bat by her irate husband.

At the same time he is dating his childhood sweetheart, who he gets pregnant while she is married to another man.

There is also no shortage of downright criminal activity (theft and vandalism) and the character of Marty – given the surname Mauser in the film – is presented as often deeply unpleasant.

Numerous film critics have used the word ‘sociopathic’ to describe the ruthless young man depicted by Timothée – Kevin O’Leary, who plays Gwyneth’s husband in the film, prefers the word ‘a*s***e.’
