Singaporean content creator Rurusama has a simple rule for air travel: Take a shower before boarding.
She jokingly said passengers who do not shower before getting on a flight “should be arrested” in a TikTok video posted on Tuesday (Sept 8).
In the clip, the local cosplayer-actress launches into a candid rant, delivered animatedly, about passengers who board without showering.
“Why are you going up the plane already marinated?” the 27-year-old asked, with the video captioned “I am traumatised”.
To illustrate her point, she likened these passengers to “a seasoned chicken” that had been “marinated in the fridge for like 12 hours”.
She added that putting on deodorant or perfume did not count as showering, saying she did not want to smell passengers before even reaching her seat.
She also had a response for anyone who thinks showering the night before is enough.
“Shower at every major plot point in your life.”
Rurusama told online platform MustShareNews that she was on a flight from Japan back to Singapore, when she found herself “stuck between two passengers who just obviously didn’t shower”.
“It has happened before, but I think this was the worst case ever. It smells so sour,” she said, when asked if she had experienced something similar.
She said the experience also put her off her food, as she was seated in the middle with both of “their scents mixed together”.
‘Fermented in the heat’
Some netizens agreed with Rurusama, with one saying the worst situation was when passengers were “seasoned” and “skin to skin” with them.
Another joked that such passengers were not “marinated in the fridge” but “fermented in the heat”.
A commenter who identified as a cabin crew member also thanked Rurusama for speaking up about the issue.
However, others urged people to consider that passengers may have spent the night at an airport or been on a long flight before boarding.
One commenter said people should be considerate about hygiene, but also towards passengers whose circumstances they may not know, adding that Rurusama should “work on your empathy”.
