Steven Spielberg has stunned fans after appearing to claim that he has seen proof that aliens have visited Earth.

Spielberg makes a surprising appearance in the new trailer for his latest blockbuster, Disclosure Day, starring Josh O’Connor and Emily Blunt.

In the film, Blunt plays a Kansas City TV meteorologist who is suddenly overcome by a mysterious extraterrestrial force while taping a weather segment live on air, and is joined by Josh O’Connor, who stars as an alien life believer, determined to reveal the truth about life outside of Earth to the rest of the world. Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo, Wyatt Russell, and Henry Lloyd-Hughes round out the cast.

The final trailer, released on Thursday, starts with Spielberg doing a direct-to-camera address.

“I am much more inclined now than I was when I made Close Encounters to really believe that we’re not the only intelligent civilization in the universe,” he says, before footage from the film kicks in.

O’Connor’s character, Daniel Kellner, then admits he has stolen long-kept government secrets about proof of living beings not on Earth.

Spielberg continues, saying, “This is a story about us. All of us, up against the most extraordinary event in human history. I used to say to myself wouldn’t it be wonderful if all of this were true? And now I’m thinking, wouldn’t it be wonderful for people to know all of this IS true?”

Fans rushed to the comments to debate Spielberg’s decision to appear in the trailer and question what he was implying with his comments.

“The timing of this is definitely not a coincidence lol,” remarked one fan.

“Why do I get the idea that this is a soft opening for the actual disclosure day?” commented a second.

A third wrote: “This makes me feel like this is an actual reveal.”

“The way he says ‘All of this is true’ sounds like a disclosure in itself,” insisted another.

A fifth fan agreed, adding: “Definitely not a coincidence, disclosure day is coming.”

The release of the film comes amid the release of numerous UFO files from the US government over the last few months.

The film is getting rave reviews from critics, seemingly marking a return to form for Spielberg after a few years out of the blockbuster game.

Gizmodo senior entertainment reporter Germain Lussier took to X to share his reaction, writing, “I loved ‘Disclosure Day.’ A dense roller coaster ride blending chase film, love story, & mystery, all wrapped in sci-fi wonder. It’s Spielberg’s best film in 20 years, filled w/ all the magic that makes his films so special, plus an all-time character/performance by Emily Blunt.”

Collider’s Editor-in-Chief, Steven Weintraub, agreed with Lussier’s sentiments, saying, “In a shock to absolutely no one, Steven Spielberg has delivered another towering home run with ‘Disclosure Day.’ I could go on and on about what I loved, but I was lucky enough to see the movie knowing almost nothing, and I strongly recommend you do the same. Stop watching the trailers. The one thing I will say: Emily Blunt is incredible. I know big summer movies aren’t usually the kinds of performances that get awards-season attention, but once people see what she does in this…”

Disclosure Day hits cinemas around the world next month.
