Othello, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, became the highest grossing play in Broadway history last week, with a total of $2,818,297.00 for eight performances.

The total came as the play is only in its second week of previews. Othello will open Sunday, March 23 for a strictly limited engagement through Sunday, June 8 at the Barrymore Theatre.

The average ticket price last week was not immediately available. The prior week, Othello topped the prices of all other shows with an average ticket price of $361.90, hundreds above the next highest price. That week, the play grossed $2.6 million across its first seven performances.

The previous record for highest grossing play was held by Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which grossed $2,718,488 for the holiday week ending Dec 31, 2023.

Othello, directed by Kenny Leon, who directed Purlie Victorious and the Our Town revival with Katie Holmes and Zoey Deutch, is lead produced by Brian Anthony Moreland, who also led last year’s revival of The Wiz.

In addition to a lengthy film career, Washington has previously starred on Broadway in A Raisin in the Sun and Fences, opposite Viola Davis, Julius Cesar, Checkmates and most recently, the 2018 revival of Iceman Cometh, in a large cast that also included Austin Butler.

Gyllenhaal has starred in three Broadway shows, including Sunday in the Park With George and most recently in the 2019 production of A Life, a one-person monologue, which was paired with Tom Sturridge in Sea Wall.
