Spice Girl Melanie Chisholm says she made a “conscious” choice to keep her daughter out of the spotlight.
Chisholm shares daughter Scarlet, 16, with ex-partner Thomas Starr, but despite her mom’s global fame, the teenager has no plans on following in her footsteps.
The singer told The Times of London in an interview published on Sunday, January 25, that she is “so relieved” that Scarlet isn’t interested in pursuing a career in the music industry.
“It’s so hard to be in the shadow of a parent who’s had success,” shared Chisholm, who shot to fame in the 1990s as a member of the Spice Girls alongside Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton and Geri Halliwell.
“The thing is, with Scarlet, she’s not in the public eye,” the singer nicknamed Sporty Spice added. “I made that conscious decision when she was a baby. Obviously I have friends who handle it very differently, each to their own, no judgment at all. But for me, probably because of my experiences with fame, I didn’t feel comfortable making that decision for her.”
Chisholm’s comments about raising her daughter out of the public’s attention come just a week after former bandmate Victoria, 51, was slammed in a statement by her eldest son, Brooklyn Beckham, amid a family estrangement.
Brooklyn, 26, and his brothers Romeo, 23, and Cruz, 20, and sister Harper, 14, have spent most of their lives in the public eye with their parents, David, 50, and Victoria.
However, the close-knit family’s private grievances were made public last week when Brooklyn spoke out against his parents in a scathing Instagram Stories statement.
In his January 19 statement, Brooklyn said, “I do not want to reconcile with my family,” and, “I’m standing up for myself for the first time in my life.”
“For my entire life, my parents have controlled narratives in the press about our family,” Brooklyn claimed. “The performative social media posts, family events and inauthentic relationships have been a fixture of the life I was born into.”
“My family values public promotion and endorsements above all else,” he said. “Brand Beckham comes first. Family ‘love’ is decided by how much you post on social media, or how quickly you drop everything to show up and pose for a family photo opp, even if it’s at the expense of our professional obligations.”
“We’ve gone out of our way for years to show up and support at every fashion show, every party, and every press activity to show ‘our perfect family,’” Brooklyn continued.

Brooklyn also alleged that his parents “have been trying endlessly to ruin my relationship” with wife Nicola Peltz Beckham “since before my wedding, and it hasn’t stopped.”
Brooklyn and Nicola, 31, wed in April 2022, though, according to Brooklyn, even his big day wasn’t without drama.
“My mum hijacked my first dance with my wife, which had been planned weeks in advance to a romantic love song,” he wrote. “In front of our 500 wedding guests, [singer] Marc Anthony called me to the stage, where in the schedule [it] was planned to be my romantic dance with my wife, but instead my mum was waiting to dance with me instead. She danced very inappropriately on me in front of everyone. I’ve never felt more uncomfortable or humiliated in my entire life. We wanted to renew our vows so we could create new memories of our wedding day that bring us joy and happiness, not anxiety and embarrassment.”
Neither David nor Victoria have publicly commented on Brooklyn’s remarks. Us Weekly previously reached out to representatives for the couple for comment.
