Sonu Nigam has crooned several iconic songs throughout his career, which have showcased his versatility across different genres. While Sonu Nigam continues to get lauded for his contribution to Indian music,he has also made headlines for controversies. From his comments on music industry to his take on the practice of “forced religiousness”, and drawing comparisons between self-styled godwoman Sukhwinder Kaur alias Radhe Maa to Goddess Kali and the Naga sadhus, he has stirred debates several times.
Sonu Nigam calls AR Rahman unfriendly
Sonu Nigam has grabbed headlines once again. He recently made some shocking comments about AR Rahman. He spoke to O2 media about the composer. He shared that AR Rahman is not the kind of person who has relationships and doesn’t open up to anyone. He added, “At least, I have never seen that. Perhaps, he opens up in front of his older friends, who have known him as Dileep. But I haven’t seen him opening up or having any relationship with anybody. He is not a friendly person. He is just into his work.” He added that AR Rahman does not speak bad about anyone and is thinking about his work.
Sonu Nigam Vs Omer Nadeem
Sonu Nigam’s song Sun Zara was released and it landed him into a controversy as Pakistani singer Omer Nadeem claimed that the song is a copy of his song, Aye Khuda. Omer took to social media and called out the makers for not giving him credit. Sonu Nigam saw that and he apologised for unknowingly using his song.
Comments on Radhe Maa
The singer became the talk of the town when he when he compared controversial self-styled god-woman, Sukhwinder Kaur alias Radhe Maa to Goddess Kali and the Naga Sadhus. He had said that suing Radhe Maa for skimpy clothes is not justified as goddess Kaali is dressed in skimpier clothes than the godwoman. He further wrote, “Men Sadhus can walk naked! Dance embarrassingly, but it takes a rape charge to put them behind bars. So much for Gender equality.”
Ayodhya tweet controversy
The singer became the talk of the town after his viral tweet on Ayodhya. A person with the same name as Sonu Nigam slammed the people of Ayodhya, after the BJP’s defeat in the Faizabad (Ayodhya) constituency, where the Ram Mandir was constructed. Later Sonu Nigam said that he is not on Twitter and he will take action against that person who is using the account in his name. Later, the person who wrote it as Sonu Nigam took to X and wrote, “It has come to my attention that Mr. Nigam has expressed concerns and is planning to take legal action against me accusing me of impersonating him. This is to clarify that my name is Sonu Nigam, as given by my parents as well as in the official records. I have no intention whatsoever of impersonating the renowned singer. I have my own identity, and any resemblance to his name is unintentional and purely coincidental.”
Sonu Nigam Vs Bhushan Kumar
Things went wrong between them in 2020. In that year, Sonu spoke about the music “mafia” on social media and people felt it was Bhushan Kumar. Sonu Nigam did not take any names. In an article, some singers reacted to Sonu’s nepotism claims. Later, Nigam said, “You have messed with the wrong person.” He took a dig at Bhushan, asking if he remembers Abu Salem (gangster) and model Anupama Kuwar aka Marina Kuwar, who accused Bhushan of sexual misconduct. Bhushan’s wife, Divya Kumar then said that Sonu was connected to the underworld and said he owed his career to her father-in-law, late Gulshan Kumar. Later, Sonu Nigam and Bhushan Kumar reunited before Laal Singh Chadha.
Sonu’s comments on Azaan
Sonu Nigam made controversial comments about the Islamic call to prayer, Azaan. He expressed his displeasure with the sound of the Azaan and called the morning Azaan “forced religiousness”. He said he didn’t believe in temples or gurudwaras using electricity to wake up people who didn’t follow the religion. People trolled him badly and said he should make statements responsibly.
