Sonam Kapoor never shies away from speaking her mind on controversial topics. Even though she has been away from movies since a long time, the actress manages to stay in the news, courtesy her fashion sense, her married life, and her public statements. At an event in the past, Sonam once opened up about harassment in the film industry and revealed how her friend suffered.
The Saawariyaa actress said, “Two of my very good friends have actually experienced horrible sexual encounters and have been harassed very badly. They don’t want to talk about it and I am completely okay with it. One of my friends was like, ‘I don’t want to be known as a victim for the rest of my life, especially in the film industry.’. She was like, ‘You know, I want to be desirable. My whole career is built on that. I take care of my 7 siblings and my family. I do not want that what defines me’.”
The video was soon shared on Reddit, where it sparked a flurry of comments. One person wrote, “This is not her story to tell. Instead of the victim, she should have shed more light on the perpetrator, if she really has the guts. She is not being an ally her, one could also view it as vouyerism.” Next comment read, “This could be about Katrina given the clues but I don’t think Katrina would ever share her harassment stories with Sonam, she is extremely guarded about her personal life and is not close with Sonam.”
A comment defending Katrina Kaif read, “For some people in comments saying why didn’t katrina stand up against harassment and go against the abuser publicly. Just try keeping yourself in her place for once, you are here in a completely new country new industry, you have responsibility of your large family. Some of you would have the guts to stand up but there are so many victims who can’t come out in open. In real world it’s really really tough to stand up against people with power. We are talking about 15-20 years back when an actress standing up against harassment in media would get called names, removed from movies, but the harassers still had biggest movies in their kitty and not even court cases had any affect on their careers.”
Sonam Kapoor refrained from revealing the name when she spoke about her friend who had experienced sexual harassment. However, Reddit decided to decode her statements and believe she was talking about Katrina Kaif. The video was shared on the platform with a caption that read, “Sonam made it too obvious shes talking about Katrina; horrible to tell this story while making it obvious who its about.”
