Son Ye-jin amused over her 4-year-old son’s remark: ‘Where did you learn that?’, Entertainment News

South Korean actress Son Ye-jin recently went on Netflix Korea’s variety show I Came to Promote, But… where she revealed what she’s been up to lately.

The 44-year-old is currently promoting her new drama The Scandal and went on the talk show together with co-stars Ji Chang-wook and Nana.

Ye-jin, who is married to actor Hyun Bin, revealed she’s not filming any projects at the moment and is focused on raising their four-year-old son Woo-jin.

She admitted that raising him is harder than working, sharing a scenario that made the cast members laugh.

“When I’m exhausted I’ll say, ‘Woo-jin, I’m going to lie down for a bit,’ and he’ll say, ‘Mum, get a grip,'” she said, adding: “Where did you learn to say that?”

“It’s amazing where kids pick things up. As their vocabulary keeps growing, I think it’s just so cute.”

Ye-jin shared that her family of three recently went to Okinawa and the US to relax after she wrapped up filming for a show.

“But travelling with a kid isn’t really a vacation. We had a pretty packed schedule centred around Woo-jin,” she said.

“It was tiring but travelling together as a family… I felt so happy.”

The conversation then shifted to the social media posts that Ye-jin shared from her family holiday.

Those following her on Instagram would know that she covers Hyun Bin’s face with stickers in most of their photos together, and she explained that it’s because her husband asked her to do so.

Ye-jin said she would ask Hyun Bin before posting them: “Can’t I just post it?”, but he’d request: “Ah, please cover me up.”

The couple had previously starred as lovers in the hit 2019 K-drama Crash Landing on You. They confirmed they were dating in 2021 and tied the knot the following year.

In another segment of the variety show, Ye-jin named Crash Landing on You as her most memorable work.

In the drama, she played chaebol heiress Yoon Se-ri whose paragliding mishap lands her in North Korea. There, she meets Ri Jeong-hyeok (Hyun Bin), a captain in the Korean People’s Army, who hides and protects her.

“Something being memorable means it was either a work that received a lot of love, or one that earned recognition for its acting. Crash Landing on You was so well-loved,” said Ye-jin.

One of the last scenes in the drama was the first one they filmed, and she admitted it was awkward.

“Since the whole script wasn’t finished yet, we only had the early episodes to work from, without knowing what would happen in the middle. Then we had to reunite at the end,” she recalled.

“At first, it was a romantic comedy, so everything was fun and funny, but it becomes a much deeper melodrama than we had expected. We didn’t know any of that at the time, so we wondered, ‘How should we act this out?'”

The iconic moment where Se-ri runs into Jeong-hyeok’s arms was Ye-jin’s idea.

“The original idea was for him to take my hand and help me up, then we’d hug, but it felt like the impact would be too weak, so I told the director, ‘I don’t think this works. I think I should see him from far away, run toward him, and fall into his arms.’ So that’s how we filmed the scene,” she shared.

The Scandal is a historical series set in the Joseon dynasty and follows Lady Cho (Ye-jin), a noblewoman living within the constraints set on women during that era.

She proposes a game of temptation with her admirer Cho Won (Chang-wook) and challenges him to seduce Hui-yeon (Nana), a widow who vowed to remain chaste following the death of the husband she never met.

The drama marks her return to the historical genre after 24 years. The last one was 2002’s Great Ambition.

Ye-jin said she struggled with the dialogue as she hadn’t filmed a historical series in so long.

“The dialogue didn’t feel natural to me at all, and I kept wondering, ‘Is this really how I should say it?’ Even when I practised at home, I kept asking myself, ‘Is this right?'” she recalled.

“When I read the script, I usually practise alone, but the lines just wouldn’t roll off my tongue… Because we don’t use this language [in present times], it was difficult to memorise the lines.”

This led to her asking Hyun Bin to help with making sure she got her lines right.

“But he’d read the lines so half-heartedly. I’d say, ‘A little more emotion,’ and he’d respond like, ‘Mm okay,'” she mused, before adding that he tried harder later on and helped her a lot.

“It must have been such a hassle, he was busy with his own work, but he still helped me a lot.”

The Scandal is streaming on Netflix.
