Marianne Faithfull has passed away peacefully with her family beside her at the age of 78.
The actress and singer, had a film and music career that spanned more than 60 years, her film credits include modern movies that Marie Antoinette, Faces in the Crowd and most recently she voiced a part in the 2021 epic sci-fi film DUNE. She was also a Grammy winner, which she won for Best Female Rock Performance in 1981 with the album Broken English her music career started in the mid-sixties and continued all the into the 2020’s. An icon in the swinging 60’s in London, Faithfull dated Mick Jagger and inspired songs like Wild Horses and You Can’t Always Get What You Want.
She was first discovered by the Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham who called her an “Angel” but saw her as someone to palm off supposedly second-rate songs to, that his main focus, the Rolling Stones wouldn’t make hits out of. This backfired when she was passed a song, that members of the Rolling Stones had written called When Tears Go By, she made it her own and it reached the UK top ten.

Faithfull’s story is one of continued resilience, she was not just famous for having been Mick Jagger’s girlfriend, she also created a career to be proud of in her own right, despite illnesses and drug addiction. She resurrected her own music career at the beginning of the 80’s with the hit album Broken English after a battle with heroin addiction in the 70’s and came back to release 20 more music albums.
A statement released today said “It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of the singer, songwriter and actress Marianne Faithfull…She will be dearly missed.”
