Scott Mills was forced to endure a marathon presenting slot on BBC Radio 2 on Thursday morning, after Vernon Kay was late to present his show due to train delays.

Having already stood in for Zoe Ball on the breakfast show, Scott remained on air for another 80 minutes after receiving a voice note from Vernon, who confirmed that he was still ‘stuck on the platform’ waiting for his train to arrive.

Scott, who on Wednesday was crowned the winner of Celebrity Race Across The World, surprised listeners who were tuning into Vernon’s mid-morning show.

He played a voice note from Vernon, which said: ‘Hi Scott it’s Vernon, well, I’ll be honest with you I never thought this would happen.

‘I’m still stood at the platform miles away from Central London, miles away from the studio, and miles away from the microphone.’

Scott then added: ‘Now me and Vernon get the same trainline in, but sometimes, like today it’s unreliable, I think this is a first right? He’s late for his own show.’

Referencing his win on Celebrity Race Across The World, he later added: ‘I managed to race 12,500 miles across South America and Vernon can’t even get from the other side of London to the studio!’

At the same time, Vernon took to Instagram Stories to confirm that he was indeed still waiting for his train, writing: ‘Train delays! Signalling issues. I’m gonna be late… @bbcradio2.’

After finally getting onto a train, he later updated his followers by adding: ‘On the train… sat still!! I’m trying @realscottmills.’

An hour and 20 minutes into his show, Vernon finally reached the studio, with Scott joking that he was no stranger to a transport-tinged journey.

In recent weeks, Scott has been standing in for Zoe Ball on his Breakfast Show, with the longtime presenter’s absence sparking concern from fans.

Despite a flurry of concerned messages online from fans, Scott opened Zoe’s show on Monday with no mention of his absent colleague.

He previously sent a message of support to the star while standing in for her on August 12, telling listeners that he was unexpectedly taking over.

‘If you set your alarm every morning to go off at 6:30am and normally Zoe comes on, please do not freak out. You have not overslept,’ he told listeners, adding that he would be in the hot seat for a while.

‘If you’ve just put us on this morning, it’s Scott Mills in for Zoe for the next few weeks. I’m sending you all my love Zo, as are the team,’ he said.

Fans and colleagues of Zoe say they are concerned for the DJ, whose annual salary of £950,000 makes her the BBC’s highest-paid woman.

Before leaving her show in August, the star enjoyed a holiday to Ibiza with her son Woody and daughter Nelly and attended Brighton Pride.

She then returned to work for three days before leaving the show.

The BBC has not offered any explanation for her absence, other than a spokeswoman last week saying she will be back later this month.

On Wednesday, viewers also saw Scott and his husband Sam declared the winners of Celebrity Race Across The World, after a nail-biting race across South America.

In the final episode of the series, the four teams rushed to the finish line as they made their way through Argentina into Chile to get to the seaside town of Frutillar.

Trekking through the stunning region of Patagonia, crossing through mountains and deserts on a tight budget, tensions were running high as the ending came near for the celebrities.

Each team choosing different routes by bus, coach, taxi and even hitch-hiking, Kelly Brook and her husband Jeremy Parisi took an early lead.

However, BBC Radio 2 presenter Scott and Sam, plus Ted Lasso’s Kola Bokinni and cousin Mary-Ellen quickly caught up with the couple in exciting scenes.

Scott and Sam were the first to sign their name in the book signaling the end of the race and crowning them the winners – beating Kola and Mary-Ellen by two hours.

Scott said: ‘Speechless. When you open that book, and there’s no other names in it, there’s no other feeling like it.

‘It’s been exhilarating, it’s been tough, it’s been so frustrating at times, but it just proves we’re a great team – a winning team’.

Sam added that winning was the ‘best feeling ever’.
