Savannah Guthrie is “holding on by a thread” as the search for her mom, Nancy Guthrie, continues, according to a body language expert.
Susan Constantine spoke with Page Six about Savannah’s heart-wrenching appearance with Hoda Kotb on the “Today” show Thursday.
“She remains hopeful,” Constantine claimed, noting that the journalist is “reliant on her Christian faith” and “the support” of Nancy’s local Tucson-area community.
Constantine noted that Savannah is “a strong woman of faith,” but that she appears “vulnerable and deeply saddened.”
“Her pain and suffering are undeniable, moving Hoda to tears, and anyone with a soul can feel Savannah’s anguish through her voice, facial expressions and body language,” she explained.
“Her sole strength is her faith, and she is holding on by a thread. However, she remains hopeful someone knows [something].”
Constantine believes Savannah only knows the information that the rest of the public already has.
“I do not see that she knows any more than any of us know. There is no indication of that in her language or body language,” Constantine told Page Six.
Fortunately, Savannah is feeling a lot of love from her NBC family.
“She feels very supported by her ‘Today’ show friends as she opens up on national TV, sharing her heart and plea for help,” Constantine said.
“As Savanah shared, she wakes up every night thinking that the horror in the middle of the night is unbearable,” she continued.
Constantine observed that Savannah is remaining “strong” in her weakest moments, but that she is leaning solely on her faith, and not “resilience or physical strength.”
“Savanah’s whole being is in pain; her mind and her thoughts are overtaken by finding her mom, and she will remain steadfast until her mom is found,” she said.
Savannah broke down in tears while speaking with Kotb about her 84-year-old mom, who has been missing since Feb. 1.
The news anchor, 54, detailed the exact moment she found out her mom had disappeared.
“My sister called me and I said, ‘Is everything OK?’ And she said, ‘No. She said, ‘Mom’s missing,’” the journalist explained. “And I said, ‘What? What are you talking about?’ She said, ‘She’s gone.’”
She also shared new details about the investigation, including that Nancy was taken from her home without any shoes on and the door was left ajar.
Savannah also slammed the online speculation that any of her family members were involved in the kidnapping and shared that God spoke to her.
“My faith is strong and resolute, but I – early on, felt that I heard for one of the very few times in my life – I heard God speak to me as I said to myself, ‘I can handle anything, God, I can handle anything. I just can’t handle not knowing. We can’t handle not knowing. I have to know,’” she told Kotb.
“And I heard a voice, and it said, ‘You do know where she is. She’s with Me. She’s with Me,’” Savannah continued. “So whether she’s on this Earth still, or whether she’s in Heaven, I know where she is. I know who she’s with, but we need to know.”
Savannah also became emotional when she shared her belief that Nancy’s disappearance could be her fault, saying, “Someone needs to do the right thing. We are in agony.”
Savannah shared that she has received countless ransom demands for her mother, but believes that only two of the demands are legitimate.
However, longtime private investigator Andy Kay, founder of Kay & Associates, told Page Six Thursday that he believes Savannah has “very realistic” expectations for the case.
“As far as we know, there has been no credible contact regarding any kind of ransom or other demand for Nancy’s release,” he explained. “It’s not even clear if any of the preliminary contacts regarding ransom were legitimate.
Meanwhile, retired FBI agent and hostage negotiator Chip Massey told Page Six that Savannah’s interview is for “exposure” so more leads can come in.
“It’s really important and a way of continuing to keep things moving, jog people’s memories, all of that,” Massey said, adding, “I can’t stress enough that there is somebody out there that knows.”
No suspect has been identified in the search for Nancy, though security footage captured an armed and masked individual outside of the grandmother’s home on the night she went missing.
