Humanity must make a Hail Mary play in Phil Lord and Chris Miller‘s latest film, so it’s appropriate that it’s getting the close-up at the Super Bowl.
Project Hail Mary unveiled its final trailer on Super Bowl Sunday, with the spot diving into the budding friendship between schoolteacher-turned-astronaut Mark Grace (Ryan Gosling) and the alien he names Rocky.
The 2021 book by The Martian author Andy Weir centers on Grace as he is sent to a neighboring star on a mission to save the Earth. Drew Goddard penned the script after earning an Oscar nomination for adapting The Martian into the 2015 movie by director Ridley Scott.
“The movie is genre defying. It’s emotional and it is funny and it’s big and the stakes couldn’t be higher – I’ve never seen a great drama that didn’t make me laugh and I’ve never seen great comedy that didn’t make me cry,” Lord said in a statement.
Added Miller: “The relationship between Grace and Rocky is the heart of the movie. It’s a story about collaboration and cooperation, and what’s possible if we work together. Ideally, you walk out of the movie feeling more hopeful than when you came in.”
Project Hail Mary marks Lord and Miller’s return to feature film directing, and will be their first since 2014’s 22 Jump Street. Since then, they’ve produced numerous films and TV shows, including the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse franchise for Sony Pictures Animation, as well as taking a detour to work on 2017’s Solo: A Star Wars Story before being replaced as directors.
Project Hail Mary arrives from Amazon MGM Studios on March 20.
