Dharmendra, fondly referred to as the ‘He-Man of Bollywood’, left an indelible impact on the viewers with his flawless performance in over 300 films. The veteran actor and producer wasn’t just lauded for his rugged looks, but also the depth he carried in his onscreen performances. Due to age-related ailment, veteran actor breathed his last on November 24, 2025. He was 89. Following his last rites, it has been revealed that no state honours were given to the star despite an incredible legacy that spanned over six decades.
Dharmendra was undergoing treatment at Mumbai residence
Veteran actor Dharmendra was discharged from the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on November 14. Going by the official statement released by his son Sunny Deol, team, actor Dharmendra had to undergo home treatment and recovery under doctor ‘s supervision.
No state honours for Dharmendra
Dharmendra was not given state honours. The development came as a surprise to many considering the massive contribution he made to Indian cinema. The veteran actor made his debut in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. Through the 1960s, he shifted from playing romantic leads to more varied roles. This helped him display his emotional and acting range that gave him an edge over others.
What are state honours and how is the decision made?
A state funeral is a ceremonial event which is organised to honour individuals who made a vital contribution to the nation. Such ceremonial events include massive arrangements which not only include military honours, but also a gun salute, and covering the coffin or body with with the national flag. A state funeral is the crucial recognition of an individual’s achievements. Who will be given state honours is a decision determined by several factors such as historical precedent, legal guidelines, and discretionary powers of government officials. Whether an individual will be given a state funeral is taken by the government. The Chief Minister has to discuss with senior cabinet members and other officials to understand the eligibility of the deceased. Manoj Kumar – popularly known as ‘Bharat Kumar’, courtesy his portrayal of patriotic heroes – was cremated with full state honours and a three-gun salute in Mumbai on April 5.
Family and friends attend his last rites
Dharmendra’s family members, including wife Hema Malini, daughter Esha Deol were seen arriving at the Vile Parle Crematorium in Mumbai. Several other stars, including Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Aamir Khan, and Salman Khan were also seen arriving to pay their last respects. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled Dharmendra’s demise. In a post on X, he wrote, “The passing of Dharmendra Ji marks the end of an era in Indian cinema. He was an iconic film personality, a phenomenal actor who brought charm and depth to every role he played. The manner in which he played diverse roles struck a chord with countless people. Dharmendra Ji was equally admired for his simplicity, humility and warmth. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, friends and innumerable fans. Om Shanti.”
