Hong Kong actress-host Priscilla Wong spoke about her difficult pregnancy and childbirth experience in the final episode of TVB programme Health Commitment Letter on Sept 19.
The 44-year-old recalled she was already expecting when she was assigned to cover the Olympics in Paris in 2024. She married Hong Kong actor Edwin Siu in 2018.
As she had experienced a miscarriage before, she didn’t want to share the news with anyone at first. With her doctor’s permission and advice, she proceeded with the assignment and gave herself a progesterone injection every day there.
Priscilla also told host Winki Lai and fellow guest Snow Suen that she had uterine fibroids — non-cancerous growths in the uterus — which resulted in severe menstrual cramps when she was younger.
She said: “When I was in secondary school, my cramps were so bad that I had to call the ambulance on two occasions. But I thought it was just cramps and every woman would have similar experiences.”
During the late stage of her pregnancy, her doctor found that her foetus had stopped growing but the uterine fibroids continued to expand.
“The day before I was admitted to hospital (for a caesarean section), the medical staff continued to check the foetus’ heartbeat, and after examining for more than an hour without saying anything, I realised that something was wrong,” Priscilla recounted.
It was only after she had given birth that she was told the medical team was actually very worried about her condition.
She explained: “The foetus’ heartbeat wasn’t regular and they suspected that my emotions could have affected him…
“My doctor also said that my abdomen was inflamed and there were many wounds… There were also many arteries around the fibroids and my doctor felt it was a dangerous condition because a small cut on a blood vessel may result in major bleeding.”
Priscilla gave birth to her first child, a son affectionately named Siu Haha, in March 2025.
She also shared in the programme that she continues to live with the fibroids in her body now.
Priscilla also reflected on her experience in an Instagram post on Sept 19: “The most important commitment is to take good care of myself.
“A mother and her child’s safety and wellness should never be taken for granted. Only by being healthy can I accompany Siu Haha in his growth, look at more scenery together and accompany him further in his life path. Being protective and supportive is my most selfless commitment as a mother.”
She ended her post with the hope that everyone would take good care of themselves and prepare for the future to protect those they love.
