A new Pokémon movie is headed to the big screen.

Pokémon: Wild Card was announced Sunday night during the closing ceremony of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships, which took place in San Francisco.

“For the first time in seven years, a new Pokémon movie is on its way,” the Pokémon Company president and CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara said at the event, according to IGN. Ishihara added that the main character is a Pokémon trading-card game player who is “battling and striving to be a champion.”

A teaser for the upcoming animated feature film also was unveiled, which revealed that the movie will be released in 2027; actually, it says “coming 2027 and beyond,” hinting more is to come. In the teaser, viewers get a glimpse of the player, who’s dressed in a yellow hoodie à la Mimikyu.

Katsuhiko Kitada is directing the film, with character designs by Akemi Hayashi. Story Inc. is producing while CloverWorks is handling the animation for Pokémon: Wild Card.

The last Pokémon movie, Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle, was released in 2020 in Japan and the following year in the U.S.

Meanwhile, 2027 also will see the debut of a Pokémon series, The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d and Pichu, on Disney+ and DisneyXD.
