Hong Kong actress Kara Wai fractured her bones three times while working on her new film Keep The Beat.
The film premiered on Aug 28 and at one of the promotional tour stops, the 66-year-old martial arts movie star said she suffered six fractures while filming one scene with her co-star, Chinese actor Zhang Youhao.
Youhao, 31, was filming a scene where he was suspended on wires about four stories high when a typhoon struck, causing his safety rope to snap.
Kara immediately grabbed the rope to pull him to safety, and the force of the sudden tug caused her to hit against a hard surface and fracture six ribs.
The injury was reportedly a centimetre away from damaging her organs but she referred to it as a “minor accident” at the event.
At the promotional event, Youhao said he felt guilty: “If Kara hadn’t given it her all to reach out and grab me, the consequences would have been unimaginable.”
According to Hong Kong media, she also fractured two ribs during rehearsals before filming officially began.
Ten days into filming, she fell while recording a dance scene in high heels, fracturing two toes.
Kara, who has won multiple acting honours at Hong Kong Film Awards and Golden Horse Awards, reportedly insisted on completing filming despite being told repeatedly to rest. She also tried her best to avoid using stunt doubles for her scenes.
Keep The Beat tells the story of dance teacher Zhan Yumei (played by Kara) who is grieving the loss of her son He Yifan (Lars Huang) when a stranger named Yu Jingyang (Youhao) enters her life.
She later finds out Jingyang is the person she’s been looking for: the recipient of Yifan’s heart. However all their chance encounters turn out to be a meticulously orchestrated plan, and a harsh truth threatens the reunion.
