A Pennsylvania high school football star died in his sleep on January 10. He was 18 years old.
Damarius Nalik Galarza, a senior at Cedar Crest High School in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, tragically passed away after a “medical event,” the Cornwall-Lebanon School District confirmed in a statement on Monday, January 12.
“Cornwall-Lebanon School District is saddened today by the news that one of our students in 12th grade, Damarius Nalik Galarza, passed away Saturday night as a result of a medical event,” the statement read. “On behalf of our entire school district community, we extend our deepest sympathy to Damarius’ family and friends during this very difficult time.”
Galarza competed on the football team, as well as the track and field team, at Cedar Crest.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Senior Falcon Football player, Damarius Galarza, who passed away in his sleep Saturday night,” read a Facebook post from the Cedar Crest football team. “Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and teammates during this difficult time. The Falcon Football Coaches and Parent Club are here to support our Falcon Family and will share more information on how to support the family as it becomes available.”
In the wake of the tragedy, Galarza’s mom, Michelle Franco, posted a GoFundMe page to help support the family with funeral costs.
“His laugh was contagious and he could make anyone smile, no matter what kind of day they were having,” she wrote on the GoFundMe page. “He played football, ran track, and loved fishing, skateboarding, rollerblading, and riding his bike. He cherished time with friends and family, and just got his driver’s license on Wednesday. He started working at Wendy’s when he was 15 and was proud of his independence. He was a very tall kid—6’4″—and his presence filled every room with warmth and joy.”
She continued, “He had a special bond with his niece, who was born just a day before his birthday, and he loved playing the piano for her. He was also an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan, always cheering on his favorite team.”

“The loss has left our family heartbroken, and we are trying to find our way through this unimaginable pain. My son was always willing to help anyone, and his kindness touched so many lives. We want to honor his memory and give him the farewell he deserves.”
Galarza was planning to attend the Pennsylvania College of Technology in the fall to study construction management, according to the GoFundMe.
“Any support from our community would mean so much to us during this difficult time,” read the GoFundMe page. “Thank you for keeping our family in your thoughts and for helping us celebrate the life of a truly special young man.”
The school district said it will make counselors available at Cedar Crest to support students and staff, according to a statement from the school.
“Counselors will be available to provide support to students and staff at the High School throughout the day on Monday, as well at other school buildings. Updated information will be shared, as appropriate, on the District website.”
