Paramount+ is betting that viewers are clamoring for more Garfield.
After 2024’s The Garfield Movie and 2021’s Garfield Originals, the streamer has greenlit a new animated series starring the cartoon cat, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Garfield himself will be voiced by Saturday Night and Fargo actor Lamorne Morris.
The untitled series will be produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studios and executive produced by Dave H. Johnson and John Trabbic III, who co-executive produced Nickelodeon’s Middlemost Post.
The animated series is being announced nearly six years after Nickelodeon and Paramount’s then-parent company, Viacom, acquired the rights to Garfield owner Paws Inc. in 2019. As part of that deal, Nickelodeon gained the ability to develop an animated series using the character and also to deploy the lasagna-loving cat in consumer products and “location-based” experiences.
Currently at the Paramount Shop, fans can accordingly purchase a $25 dollar “Lasagna-Yeah!” shirt and various Garfield comic strip paraphernalia.
2024’s The Garfield Movie was released by Columbia Pictures through Sony Pictures Releasing and generated a lukewarm $257 million worldwide. Nevertheless, the film is set for a sequel, with Chris Pratt returning to voice the character.
The new Garfield series will help Paramount+ beef up its children’s offerings, which already features heavy-hitters with the kindergarten and elementary school set SpongeBob SquarePants and PAW Patrol. Paramount+ has recently greenlit additional kids-focused series The Elephant & Piggie Show! and The Pigeon Show! Starring the Pigeon.
