Nick Jonas opened up about the “frightening” birth of his and Priyanka Chopra’s daughter for the first time.

“She came to the world under sort of very intense circumstances, which I’ve not really talked about ever,” the musician said about his baby girl, who was born in January 2022, on the “Jay Shetty Podcast” Wednesday.

He explained that they got a call, telling them she would be born three months early, and they immediately rushed to the hospital.

“She came out [and] she was one pound, 11 ounces and purple basically. These angels at the NICU kind of resuscitated her in that moment,” he emotionally recalled.

Because Malti was born during a time when COVID-19 precautions were still in place, the Jonas Brothers member and his wife were forced to “do 12-hour shifts at the hospital for three and a half months” as their daughter remained in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

“I could still sort of like, smell it, you know, there’s always visceral things. It was both comforting and frightening to be there every day and to see sort of other families going through similar situations. But she fought every day for three and a half months and slowly started to gain some weight,” he said.

After undergoing six blood transfusions in three and a half months, the new parents were able to take their 4-year-old Malti home.

“And I feel like she knows,” Jonas said of the toddler. “How she entered the world and what that first chapter of her life was like. And so every day is a gift and you can actually feel it on her in the way that she behaves and how exciting everything is.”

Although this is the first time the singer has gone into full detail about Malti’s birth, he previously called the whole experience “wild.”

“It’s just been a magical season in our life,” the “Jealous” crooner, 33, told Kelly Clarkson during a 2022 appearance on her show.

“Also pretty wild, but it’s a blessing to have her home. It’s been wonderful.”

Jonas and Chopra, 43, remained tight-lipped about their surrogacy journey until Malti was born and have shied away from showing their daughter’s face on social media.

And although this is the first Jonas has spoken about Malti’s traumatizing birth, the former Bollywood actress opened up about her 100 days in the NICU in 2025.

“I was in the [operating room] when [Malti] came out,” Chopra told British Vogue after admitting that she and Jonas feared their daughter wouldn’t “make it.”

“She was so small, smaller than my hand,” she added before praising the NICU nurses for doing “God’s work.”

The “Quantico” actress also spoke about how Jonas supported her while Malti was in the hospital.

“I remember [Jonas] just held me by my shoulders, and I said, ‘Just tell me what to do, because I don’t know what to do,’” she told “Today” in April 2023.

“And he’s like, ‘Just get into the car with me.’ And we drove to the hospital.”

“She was born, and from the moment she took her first breath to now, she’s never been without one of us, ever.”
