A new Pokemon movie is set for release in 2027.

The film – Pokemon: Wild Card – is the first Pokemon movie to be released in seven years, and was announced during the closing ceremony at the 2026 Pokemon World Championships in San Francisco on Sunday night (Aug 30). 

Tsunekazu Ishihara, Pokemon Company president and CEO, said at the event: “For the first time in seven years, a new Pokemon movie is on its way”. 

According to IGN, Ishihara also said that the main character in the upcoming movie is a card game player who is “battling and striving to be a champion”. 

Fans were treated to a glimpse of the player in a teaser which was shown on Sunday night, which also said that the film is “coming 2027 and beyond” – hinting that the movie could be the start of a film series. 

The film is being directed by Katsuhiko Kitada, with characters designed by Akemi Hayashi. 

It’s being produced by Story Inc., while CloverWorks in charge of the animation. 

It will be the first Pokemon movie since Pokemon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle was released in 2020 in Japan. 

The movie announcement is further proof that 2027 is going to be a big year for Pokemon, as a new series titled The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d and Pichu is set to premiere on Disney Plus and DisneyXD. 

A clip of the upcoming movie was also shared on the Pokemon Instagram page, alongside the caption: “Get ready for Pokemon: Wild Card, an all-new animated film featuring a Pokemon TCG player and Mimikyu! 

“Stay tuned!”

With fans taking to the comments section to have their say, with one writing: “Yesss! Can’t wait to watch.”
