Natalie Bassingthwaighte has revealed the deeply personal turning point that led her to propose to partner Pip Loth – despite once declaring she would never marry again.
In an emotional extract from her forthcoming memoir Love Like This, obtained via Stellar, the star lifts the lid on her journey from heartbreak to a surprise engagement, admitting she had become anti-marriage after splitting from ex-husband Cameron McGlinchey.
‘I was never going to get married again. After Cam and I separated, I became increasingly disillusioned with the idea,’ she wrote.
The singer said the pain of ending her marriage to her Rogue Traders bandmate, which ended in 2023 after 12 years together, lingered long after the relationship itself.
‘That kind of pain doesn’t just vanish because you’ve moved on or found another relationship. It’s the kind of grief you know will keep showing up at every big life milestone and in small, surprising ways.’
By 2024, she had doubled down on that stance, even after meeting and going public with her new partner Pip Loth in November 2023.
Natalie Bassingthwaighte has revealed the deeply personal turning point that led her to propose to partner Pip Loth – despite once declaring she would never marry again
‘I was Natalie ‘Never Getting Married’ Bassingthwaighte. It became a badge I wore proudly, like proof I’d learned my lesson.’
In a blunt rejection of convention, she added:
‘F*** the marriage. F*** the house. F*** the white picket fence. Keep the kids and the dog, obviously.’
But the hardline stance began to crumble after a quiet exchange with Pip – one that reshaped her perspective on marriage entirely.
‘You know, it wasn’t even legal for me to get married until 2017,’ Natalie revealed Pip told her.
The comment, referencing Australia’s Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey, struck a nerve.
‘I felt silly that it hadn’t dawned on me how much of a privilege it was that I’d been able to get married. Not once, but twice,’ Natalie wrote.
Natalie said she came to understand that, for Pip, marriage symbolised something far deeper than tradition.

‘The more I listened to Pip the more I realised that for them, marriage wasn’t about conformity; it was about being seen and chosen in a world that had for so long told them they weren’t allowed to be.’
The defining moment came soon after.
‘I know how you feel, so I’ll never ask,’ Natalie said Pip told her.
‘That comment made me rethink everything. I was rejecting an institution… but why was I holding on to that rejection so tightly?’
Within months, Natalie had secretly begun planning a proposal – complete with a custom-designed ring and a romantic overseas setting.
The couple travelled to New York for her 50th birthday, where she orchestrated an elaborate proposal involving a poet in a park, after an earlier attempt to recruit Noah Reid — best known for Schitt’s Creek — fell through.
‘I dropped to one knee and pulled out the non-bling bling,’ she wrote.
‘Spoiler: they said yes!’
The extract offers one of the most candid insights yet into the singer’s personal life following her shock split – and signals a new chapter firmly on her own terms.
‘Love, as it turns out, isn’t something that you find; it’s something you keep choosing.’
