Naomi Watts dressed the part.
The actress, 57, paid tribute to her on-screen character Jackie Kennedy Onassis at the “Love Story” premiere on Tuesday, embracing the former First Lady’s penchant for opera-length white gloves and midcentury glamour.
Watts turned heads at Carnegie Hall in New York wearing a dramatic black Balenciaga cold-shoulder gown featuring a crystal-embellished neckline that added just the right amount of sparkle.
But it was the accessories that brought the look home: Watts completed the look with pristine white opera-length gloves and massive diamond Cartier earrings worth $133,000. The drop style were each set with 30 individual diamonds: 24 baguette cut, 4 princess cut and 2 troidia cut.
Watts wore her blond bob down with a soft wave, and makeup artist Mary Wiles said she aimed for “effortless elegance” with “glowing skin and fresh makeup” in a post following the event.
Stylist Jeanann Williams pulled the ensemble together for the actress, who is set to star in the upcoming FX series chronicling the romance and tragic fate of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette.
The choice of gloves was a fitting nod to one of the former First Lady’s favorite accessories. Kennedy Onassis was known for wearing white gloves for daytime and formal events alike throughout the 1960s, pairing them with evening gowns for state dinners at the White House and glamorous galas abroad.
Balenciaga, then, was a natural choice for Watts’ look, as creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli has made opera gloves a signature accessory since joining the house last year.
Already, they’ve become a red carpet staple, appearing on Demi Moore at Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards, Tate McRae at the Grammys and Tessa Thompson at a Doha gala.
“Love Story” premieres Feb. 12 on FX and Hulu.
